Loosely based on a true-to-life event, Patti Lacy's "framed" story is one that is rich in setting and emotions, giving it the feel of a saga. From New Orleans to Mississippi to Chicago to Thailand, the reader is swept away in THE RHYTHM OF SECRETS. Sheila Franklin is the wife of a successful evangelist whose foundation is on the brink of national attention. Big things are coming, but the secret Sheila harbors may demolish all she and her husband have spent a lifetime building. When the son she gave up for adoption calls with an urgent request, Sheila must choose: continue to live a lie or finally admit the truth about her past even if it means disaster for her marriage and their ministry.
Patti's writes with flourish, lush in sensory detail, weaving a tale that is true to both of the story's time frames: the Vietnam War era and the deeply prejudiced South in the 1940s. Music - jazz, classical, and sacred - flows through the scenes as it does in the character of Sheila. The harsh reality made me uncomfortable at times, but there were also tender reminders of the depths of God's love and grace and the timeless message that He is greater than all the evil and imperfections in this world.
Patti writes with panache in this bold, yet ever redemptive novel. Readers of historical fiction, women's fiction, and family sagas will love this deeply absorbing book. Bravo, Patti!
After reading Patti Lacy's previous two books, An Irishwoman's Tale and What the Bayou Saw, I knew I had to order a copy of Rhythm of Secrets as soon as it released. Though I didn't believe anything could top her eloquent stories that span seas and secrets, I have to say that this is her best book yet.
Rhythm of Secrets is about Sheila Franklin, a pastor's wife who has buried a painful secret in her past. When the son she gave up for adoption comes to find her and solicits her help, Sheila relives the moments that led them both there and shares her story with her son. Wanting to prove her love and join him with the quest that led him to find her, Sheila risks everything, including her life and her reputation, to travel across the world and help him win back his true love.
Beautifully written, Rhythm of Secrets is a powerful story about finding your identity in Christ. From the New Orleans French Quarter to the jungles of Vietnam, Lacy leads the reader on an awe-inspiring journey that challenges all of us to abandon the constraints placed on us by others and embrace the freedom and grace God promises. Weaving extravagant setting descriptions in with brilliantly developed characters, Patti's literary writing style lures the reader past the words on the page and into a new world full of color, beauty and the depth of human experience.
A real story that is not afraid to broach painful subjects, Rhythm of Secrets is a refreshing addition to Christian fiction.
The ‘secret' is out — Patti Lacy is easily one of the most gifted authors in Christian fiction today, and her stunning new novel, The Rhythm of Secrets is absolute proof. From the delicious jazz-filled streets of New Orleans to the seedy underworld of Bangkok, Thailand, embark on a journey that transcends the mere pages of book to become a riveting life experience. No longer a "well-kept secret," Patty Lacy is a master storyteller who speaks to the soul with a powerful and unique rhythm all her own, weaving a tale so rich with emotion and spiritually haunting, story and reader become one.
Patti Lacy's prose are as beautiful as ever. I think readers will love the way Patti weaves music into the story. Interesting characters and a plot that pulls you page after page will keep readers glued. Wonderful story and superb writing.
"Jesus could free her from her past. Her present. Free her for the future." (p. 252)
This is a story of a woman who has lived three very different lifestyles in her forty-some-odd years. And now, at the juncture of these very different life experiences yet a fourth and final episode lies ahead. Traveling half-way around the world with a son she is just getting to know, and to save a life of a woman living in the hell of sexual slavery, Sheila discovers that God is ever-present in all of her circumstances - that indeed, He has been by her side for many years. And now that all of her past secrets are laid bare to the world, she discovers that God has redeemed those as well.
What an amazing story. Somewhere, in some scene or in the words of some character, every reader is going to recognize a part of their spiritual journey. They are going to recognize God's sovereignty in every event of their life. The Rhythm of Secrets is a virtual symphony that honors all that is Holy and Righteous about our Heavenly Father. It strips the mask of human judgment from every heart and shines the light of truth and Christ's love into the darkest human conditions.
I encourage you to experience this story. Your heart will be touched and challenged by the truth you will find there. Patti Lacy has done an excellent job with this story, and I know God will touch many with its message!
