Editorial Reviews

'Bestselling author Wiseman (The House that Love Built) encourages readers to think through their feelings about Islam, Christianity, faith, love, and what it means to help others. Her novel will challenge, encourage, and stimulate discussion among her loyal fans and first-time readers.' ---Publishers Weekly
“Known for her Amish romances and Texas-set contemporaries, Wiseman takes a plotline from a situation in her own life and creates an intense narrative about what happens when a woman chooses to follow her heart into a culture very different from her own. An inspiring reminder that God is always with us, even in the bleakest of situations. Recommended for fans of Malala Yousafzai's I Am Malala.” ---Library Journal

I didn't really know what to expect from this book, and my first read from Beth Wiseman. But all I can say is "Wow".

This story started very slow for me. I almost put the book down a couple of times because I was a little put-off by what appeared to be pro-Muslim content. But I realized later that a lot of that was simply background information to set up the story that was to come.

Once the main character headed off on her journey, the story took a full turn and I couldn't read fast enough. This story will pull at you emotionally and leave you devestated by things that happen outside of our country. But it will also leaving you with a sense of "Wow" at how God took such a horrible situation and worked with it.

The truth behind this entire story is that God is taking care of us. He listens to our prayers, He knows our needs, and He does things in His time and for reasons that sometimes only He can understand. But if we truly lean on him, He will get us through.

I recommend this as a must-read for everyone.

I was extremely disappointed and disgusted with The Promise. This was my first novel from Beth Wiseman and it will be my last.

I never understood where the author was coming from spiritually speaking. Mallory has no faith and doesn't seem to have any desire to understand God. Tate is a devoted Catholic yet he sleeps with his girlfriend {Mallory} and wants her to move in with him. Ismail and Soraya are Muslims and are engaged to one another, but they are also sharing the bed before marriage. I don't appreciate the fact that intimacy outside of marriage was portrayed and even encouraged throughout the book.

I was disappointed that the Quran was mentioned the most throughout the book with an emphasis on what it said rather than the written Word of God, the Bible. The way the author talked about Catholics, Muslims, and Christians seemed like she was saying all religions are the same and it just depends on which religion we're born into. The author was never clear on who the one and only God is - His love, mercy, caring, and forgiveness was never brought to light and more importantly, salvation through the shed blood of Jesus was never mentioned. When Jesus was mentioned he was mentioned as only a prophet which is what the Quran says. There was no emphasis on true Christianity so I am confused as to why this book is labeled under Christian fiction. To finish it off the author used a nasty cuss word towards the end of the book which was absolutely not necessary!

Have we, believers of Jesus Christ, conditioned ourselves to just accept the ways of the world? Do we think a cuss word here and there or unmarried couples sleeping with one another is okay? Do we simply bypass our convictions just so we can read a good storyline? When I pick up a Christian fiction book I always feel safe opening the pages because I know it will be clean and wholesome, but this book was the opposite. . .

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this book for no one can take away from it that there is one way of salvation through Jesus Christ and that He is the one and only true God - the God that the Bible presents.

    DONT!

THANK YOU to Beth Wiseman for taking such a courageous step and writing this amazing book! I can not imagine the depths your research took you to BRAVO!

And THANK YOU Beth, for infusing this story with such a powerful message of God! If ever there was a place for it

Sixteen year old Mallory's parents refused to give permission for her to donate a kidney to save her cousin's life. Mallory's life goal is to "save a life". When her urologist boss, a Muslim from Pakistan, tells her of his cousin's daughter who has cancer and needs to come to the US for treatment, Mallory wants to help. She skypes with the smooth talking cousin who needs to marry an American in order to bring his daughter to the US.

Despite the fact that she loves a man in Houston, Mallory goes to Pakistan to marry the cousin and enable his daughter to receive treatment. Once in Pakistan, Mallory learns the daughter does not even have cancer and that Abdul is not the man she thought. Getting back to the United States proves to be very difficult and dangerous.

The Promise is inspired by actual events. It was a very interesting read and shows what an American woman can experience when they enter a very different culture. I received this book in a giveaway and would recommend it to others.

Excellent story, couldn't put the book down. The cover and back cover do not really give you suspense, drama, love and meaning behind this book. I am glad that I received this book for review and had to read it... I would not have picked this up in the store to read, due to the description. However, this is a book that is based on a true story and you don't really know that until you read the end wrap up by the author. What an adventure, learning experience and it rips your heart out.

I started this book and couldn't put it down, we lost the power and I was left in the dark very upset because I wanted to know what was going to happen. Luckily 2 hours later the power came back on and I got out of bed and finished the book. (of course dead the next day due to lack of sleep).

This story is about a promise that is made to her cousin when they were young to save someone's life. It is about how love, faithfulness and dedication will determine GOD's way for you. Keep faith in GOD and you will know his plan for you, even through the fear and heartache, HE will come through for you.

Buy this book, be prepared to read in one sitting. Buy for all your friends, they will love it! Best book I have read in a really long time. Keep thinking of this story line and what she went through really happens in today's world. Can't say anything bad, just wish it was a series!! Became attached to the characters, I would love for Beth to write the true story of her friend that this story is based on.
