A creative and splendid tool for making the weekly text become a homiletic reality: getting started (Monday); connecting the Bible and today (Tuesday); drawing on experience (Wednesday); what the preacher says (Thursday); matters of style and substance (Friday); gospel matters (Saturday). 297 pages, softcover.
Paul Wilsons The Practice of Preaching has introduced a generation of students not only to the how of preaching, but also to thewhy. In this thoroughly revised edition, Wilson has strengthened this essential textbook even more, principally in two ways. First, he has further emphasized the role of practices in preaching, leading the reader through the preachers week as she or he constructs and prepares to deliver the sermon. Second, he has surveyed the current debate in homiletics over what preaching the text means, and constructed a far-reaching theological argument that the sermons most central task should be about preaching the gospel.
Paul Scott Wilson is Professor of Homiletics at Emmanuel College of the University of Toronto. He is one of the most respected and recognized teachers of homiletics in North America. He is the author of a number of books, including The Practice of Preaching, Imagination of the Heart, God Sense: Reading the Bible for Preaching, and The Four Pages of the Sermon, all published by Abingdon Press. He is the General Editor of The New Interpreter's Handbook of Preaching.
