Publisher's Description

John Bunyan was a simple maker and mender of pots and kettles who received very little education. In spite of that, he penned the most successful allegory ever written. He lost his first wife and was imprisoned for twelve years for his compelling—but unlicensed—preaching. Nevertheless, his preaching about the gravity of sin, salvation by grace, the cost of discipleship, perseverance, and the glory of eternal life lives on in the signs and symbols of The Pilgrim’s Progress. Embark on a perilous journey with Christian, the lead character, from the City of Destruction to the luminous safe haven of the Celestial City. The journey will encourage you to “set your hope fully on the grace to be given you” amidst the obstacles of life.

Excellent quality. When my kids (14, 12, 10) were asked to turn off the Playstation to listen to an audio CD, they predicted it would be monotone and boring. I explained it was like the Chronicles of Narnia with mystery, good and evil, which usually appeals to my son (14), but he only offered further protests. We began by reading he back of the CD box about author John Bunyan's story and that this was the most famous allegory every. After we defined the word allegory, a daughter said I bet he had to use allegory because he was in prison and was not allowed to write it plainly. She loves secrets so the intrigue began, but there were still huge reservations and protests that the narrator would speak in monotone. So we turned it on and after the first few sentences they were surprised it was a woman narrating. More importantly she had great inflection, clarity, and her voice sounded like the words she was reading. She wasn't afraid to act a little like the text which held their attention remarkably. She sounds like Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music, with her slight British accent. said one. That was a compliment! The story narrated is the original unabridged text which uses old English with Thees and Thous. We paused to talk about that but it didnt bother the kids. Instead it added to the mystery to try to understand the hidden meaning of the allegory and the words. Every so often we would hit the remotes pause, define a word, and quickly get back to the story which had captivated them. We would also quickly pause to make sure the hidden meaning of the story was understood. This kept them engaged so they didnt get lost. When the end of CD 1 (of 9) came we were on chapter 3 and the kids said Dont let it end now, and they begged to put in CD 2!!!. They discovered an audio CD could be captivating as the mystery and secrets of the allegory unfolded, with a pleasant narrator with great inflection and curiosity in her delivery of the story!
