Product Description

Written by two leading Old Testament scholars and widely used throughout the world, the second edition of Davies and Rogerson's The Old Testament World describes the historical, social, and cultural setting in which the Old Testament was written and examines the major genres of literature that it contains. The authors illuminate the literature of the Old Testament by showing how it was shaped by the events, social structures, and religious and intellectual ideas of the ancient civilizations and cultures in which it was produced. Rather than using a conventional canonical-theological approach, the book presents the Old Testament as a monumental cultural achievement. Now thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the many developments in critical scholarship, it is arranged according to major topics for study, followed by sections that introduce the major divisions of the text. It is illustrated with pictures, maps, and charts. 250 pages, softcover.

This small volume is magnificent as an introductory guide to the Old Testament.

    Pros:

-It provides relevant background material without being too overbearing.

-Each of the OT books receives relevant treatment (whether specifically or in a group).

-The authors are respectful of faith traditions even where their conclusions may be uncomfortable for a person of faith (myself included).

    Cons:

-Few authors are actually engaged in the text. The giants like Gunkel and Noth are mentioned, but many other capable scholars are left unmentioned.

-There are no good citations. One cannot check the sources that the authors used. One may only look at the "Further Reading" suggestions.

Aside from those small quibbles, I completely recommend this book for the informed student of the Old Testament. (Not necessarily the best choice for a beginning reader, however).

Takes a low view of the Bible

This is a good book for readers who don't believe the Bible is the Word of God unless it is verified by science and archaeological findings. The writers take a very low view of Scripture, treating it like just another ancient resource to be compared with all the others.
