I have used this book as a discipling tool for many years now. In a straightforward approach with deep humility of heart, this book captures the journey of a humble servant of Jesus who truly desired to serve Him in the great and small tasks offered him. And when we are serving Jesus, there are really no great servants, are there? Just fellow towel bearers who wash feet, pray, confess, forgive, and follow the Master, Who always leads us in paths of righteousness for His Name sake. Although I have read this book in one sitting, I find that slowing walking through it with a friend is far more enriching.
This deceptively simple book takes us to the heart of Christian service and to some of the stumbling blocks servants, especially leaders, face. With humility, respect for other humans, and a deep understanding of our Savior, Nouwen gives us all a lot to think about and apply.
This is a great book, every pastor and church leader should read. Every person wanting to be in ministry or leadership should read this book. It teaches you how to put your heart, mind and body in the place where it needs to be in order to be a leader. That place is in fellowship with Jesus Christ. Great book. Read it!
