This book starts with mankind's search for usable metals for tools, through the attempts of the alchemists to create gold, all the way to modern day search for what the world is made of. I read it as an adult/teacher/mom, and found it is chock full of the attitude of inquiry I want to foster in my kids. My daughter will be doing HS Chemistry next year and will read this book along with her course. The first chapters are easier than the last chapters. So the beginning chapters could be read by middle school, but the last chapters are not as inherently interesting. They are 'informative' so it would be appropriate for a middleschooler who loves science and is willing to push-through the difficulty, and for a high-schooler who has gotten used to following a complex train of thought. The last chapters bend-in on each other, making cross-references to so-and-so's research, and also is dealing with how to separate elements in lab situations, which is why it is complicated.

This is a clear, easy to read text and makes a great supplement to any chemistry curriculum.
