In a phrase ... what a great book!!!McDill, a preaching prof @ Southeastern Seminary, is (at risk of stating the obvious) extremely well read in the arena of preaching. He takes you through several steps in the preaching process, ranging from the call to preach, the person of the preacher, voice mechanics, styles, presentations, sermon design, and the preaching moment. This is not necessarily a book on "how to craft a sermon" although you will certainly benefit in that area from reading it. He deals more with the issues of what makes for healthy preaching. For instance, he spends a lot of time helping you see how important your personal lifestyle affects your audience ... with quotes such as "You cannot be one kind of person and another kind of preacher." In fact, the Lord really used McDill and his book to impress something upon me, and that is: for so long I have heard people pray for me (and have prayed myself) "Lord, remove me when I preach and just let it be You in my place." We all understand that this is an attempt to be sure God gets the glory ... which is noble and right. However, God does not work around my personality - He works through it. He does not want me to hide behind a sermon. McDill also makes a great case for preaching without notes; moreover, he gives you practical steps on how to accomplish such a feat. This book is absolutely loaded with quotes from preachers both past and present. All in all, it was a super book well worth the money. His writing style is very conversational, and he does not bogg you down with academic jargon. I try never to read a book without a highlighter in my hand at the same time. This book was so good that I'll leave you with this ... by the time I was finished it was almost dried up!!!!
