Product Description

Twenty-one-year-old Grace Byler longs to find her missing mother and to uncover the secret that drove her to leave them three weeks before. Grace suspects the reason has to do with her father and his reserved, uncommunicative ways. This conviction led Grace to break off her betrothal to her quiet, staid beau, and she is now resigned to remain single. But when the young Amishman she thought was courting her best friend takes a sudden interest in her, Grace is befuddled and wonders if he can be trusted.

"Englisher" Heather Lang has come to Amish country to relive fond memories of her mother and to contemplate a grave medical prognosis of her own. While in Bird-in-Hand, Heather meets Grace Byler and the two young women strike up a fast friendship, amazed by how well they click.

Some authors write a series in which the parts could be read in any order, focusing on different key characters with a locality, or family connection. that is NOT the case for Beverly Lewis's Seasons of grace series. All the books are about the same people and they follow on from each other like one very long book, so they must be read in the correct order.

The Missing follows on from The Secret, continuing the story of Grace Byler's longing to find her missing mother and to discover the reasons behind her leaving them in the first place, a very unAmish thing to have done. My heart ached for Judah,Grace's father, who is trapped in a world of his own, emotionally paralysed and uncommunicative. Maybe he would try harder to break out if he knew how it affected those around him - his wife and now Grace who second guesses her decision to marry because her Dad is too sullenly silent.

There is romance, though, and more intertwining of the lives of Grace and Heather. you'll enjoy reading more about these two brave young women.

Lettie Byler is still absent from her family, but she is no closer to finding what she seeks on her journey. Grace is convinced that her father Judah's uncommunicative, silent manner is what drove her Mamma away. Breaking things off with her now-serious beau, Grace seeks to find the answers to her mother's disappearance. Grace's grandparents are mysteriously mum about what could have caused their daughter to leave, and while Judah's heart breaks every day for his missing wife, Grace pulls the family together during the busiest time of the year, lambing season.

Heather Nelson strikes up a quick friendship with Grace, and finally tells her of her grave diagnosis. Grace is supportive of Heather seeking natural, alternative methods before seeking conventional medicine. While Heather has lost her adoptive mother to death, Grace has lost hers to an unknown reason that she has yet to discover. The girls seek solace from each other's company, all the while seeking answers to their big questions. Is Lettie ever truly planning to return? Or has she run away for good?

While I found this story to be enjoyable and thoroughly entertaining, my only gripe was that it was somewhat repetitive. Yes, we know Heather is sick, yes, we know Lettie up and disappeared, and yes, we know it's not typical for Amish mothers to do that. We've also read multiple times that Judah is not a man of many words, and I understand the concept.

But all trivial things aside, this series kept me up all hours, reading way into the night, wondering what would happen to everyone in the end. I was actually taken by surprise at one point, because I didn't see a plot twist coming and got completely blindsided by a major element in the story. While it wasn't the best of the best, it was a solid read, and well worth it.

While the first book in the series "The Secret" left readers with many unanswered questions, this book answers many of them for the reader. Unfortunately many of these questions are still unanswered for the characters in the book. Lewis does a great job of painting the frustration felt by each of the characters. Grace is frustrated by not being allowed to go search for her mother and having little to aid her in her search, Lettie encounters many difficulties in her search for the midwife, and Heather has a lot trouble trying to convince her father to her use the natural healing method. As a reader you cannot help but sympathize with each of the characters, what they are going through and wanting to help them with their situation. I particularly felt this way about Grace. I wanted to enter into the story, put my arm around her and tell her where her mother is.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Beverly Lewis
Submitted: August 07, 2009

Tell us a little about yourself.  My maternal grandmother was shunned from her cloistered, Plain community--in Paradise, PA, in Lancaster County, PA. Having heard the stories of her courageous move (toward Christ), I believed the world should hear her story. So I began writing adult fiction loosely based on her life.

What was your motivation behind this project?  The amazing courage my grandmother, Ada Buchwalter, exhibited when she accepted Jesus as her Savior and Lord and began dating a ministerial student, whom she eventually married...and whom helped move her away from the Plain community, of which she was entrenched.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  THE MISSING is Book Two of my most recent series, "Seasons of Grace." I hope my readers will see and feel, through Grace Byler's viewpoint what happens when a family keeps secrets from each other. The havoc it can cause, as well as the redemption that comes with forgiveness.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  For several years, I've wanted to write this story about an Amish woman who flees her home and community in search of her past--to attempt to make right the wrongs she committed as a teenager. Lettie Byler's continuing story has brought me to an even more powerful knowledge of God's mercy and grace on all our lives!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  God's Word is first and foremost for my inspirational reading. A true compass by which to measure one's life. I love, also, anything by Chip Ingram, Tozer, Andrew Murray, and Ogilvie. For my fiction reading pleasure, I enjoy very much: Dale Cramer's book, Levi's Will, and Lynn Austin's historicals, along with general market novelists--Kim Edwards, Elizabeth Strout, Alice Munro, Olive Ann Burns, and all the classic literature.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I love hearing from my readers and still attempt to answer hundreds of emails (via my web site) each month. Feel free to comment on my stories--I love your input. And have a delightful rest of the summer!
