Product Description

"Sonship" is an important, yet often overlooked, theme throughout the Bible. Adam, the first human being, is identified as a "son of God"; Israel is God's "first-born son"; the covenant with king David is cast in father-son terms; Christians are children of God, "adopted as sons"; and the same designation brings Scripture to a triumphant conclusion: "He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son" (Revelation 21:7). The story line of the Bible makes clear that God is making for himself a family of sons and daughters who will serve him and reign with him in his kingdom forever--and this purpose is achieved through Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.

In The Message of Sonship, Trevor Burke shows how "sonship" is the focus of creation, is a metaphor for salvation, carries moral obligation and is the goal of restoration of broken, suffering humanity. For those whom God the Father adopts into his household as sons and daughters, the family bonds that begin in this life will last for all eternity.

Let me start off by saying that The Message of Sonship by Trevor Burke was one of the most heart-warming books I have read in a very long time. This is not due to any sort of amazing talent or writing style of the author, rather the soul-filling content. You can read a book by John Piper or D.A. Carson and come away with, "Wow. This is a man really in love with God." You come away from this book thinking, "Wow. God is really in love with me." Burke does an outstanding job of hiding himself behind a veil of Scripture and commentary.

The Message of Sonship is a Biblical Theology study of God's adoption throughout the bible. From Genesis to Revelation, Burke analyzes the major sonship passages to show the familial relationship between not only God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, but also the relationship between Himself and His chosen people. This truth of sonship completely sets the Christian faith apart from all other religions. In the words of the loved disciple, "See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God" (1 Jn 3:1).

I have only two criticisms for this book, and I will make them brief. The grammatical errors, especially in the first third of the book, are very distracting for a former English grammar teacher. This is the first (of hopefully many) printing of this book, and I assume the publisher remove them. I realize this is a petty criticism, but I have to say it. The second criticism may be splitting hairs, but I think it could have been better emphasized throughout the book. I wish that Burke had at times, turned his focus on sonship around and highlighted the Fatherhood of God. I realize this is in essence the same relationship and theme, but there are obviously two sides to a Father-son relationship. This fatherhood is mentioned on several occasions, but seemingly as a causality of the sonship of His people.

The bottom line is that this book is a wonderful aid for meditating on Scripture that reminds the believer of who they are in Christ. I have used it much less as a book to read than as a devotional guide through the Bible. I recommend having your Bible handy to read the passages ahead of time and pray before diving in to Burke's commentary. If you read any book that has been reviewed on this site, this is the one. I hope you enjoy.
