Was Jesus born of a virgin? Did he know he was the Messiah? Was he bodily resurrected from the dead? Did he intentionally die to redeem humankind? Was Jesus God? Two leading Jesus scholars with widely divergent views go right to the heart of these questions and others, presenting the opposing visions of Jesus that shape our faith today.
Marcus J. Borg (1942–2015) was a pioneering author and teacher whom the New York Times described as "a leading figure in his generation of Jesus scholars." He was the Hundere Distinguished Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University and canon theologian at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, and he appeared on NBC's The Today Show and Dateline, ABC's World News, and NPR's Fresh Air. His books have sold over a million copies, including the bestselling Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, Reading the Bible Again for the First Time, Jesus, The Heart of Christianity, Evolution of the Word, Speaking Christian, and Convictions.
N. T. Wright is the former bishop of Durham in the Church of England and one of the world's leading Bible scholars. He is now serving as the Chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the School of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews. For twenty years he taught New Testament studies at Cambridge, McGill, and Oxford Universities, and he has been featured on ABC News, Dateline, The Colbert Report, and Fresh Air. Wright is the award-winning author of Surprised by Scripture, The Case for the Psalms, How God Became King, Simply Jesus, After You Believe, Surprised by Hope, Simply Christian, Scripture and the Authority of God, The Meaning of Jesus (coauthored with Marcus Borg), as well as being the translator for The Kingdom New Testament.
Marilyn Henry4 Stars Out Of 5November 25, 2009Marilyn HenryHave enjoyed reading the opinions of both authors - seeing where they agree and disagree. I must admit I find Wright a bit harder to understand - some of his sentence structure is lengthy and convoluted requiring rereading for comprehension. Sometimes I wish Wright would just clearly state his opinion rather than seeming to hide it in "the facts". All in all, both authors present much food for thought. I would recommend the book. In my opinion, it was well worth the money.
Anne Hunt5 Stars Out Of 5October 13, 2008Anne HuntI really enjoyed the repartee between these two esteemed theologians. I learned more from the academic views of N.T. Wright and I found Marcus Borg's thesis rather redundant throughout. I highly recommend this book for all interested christians who are seeking more of a background of our faith and for non believers an interesting exchange of ideas.
