MillstreetreaderAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5The butternut widows seek a wife for Pastor AdamJuly 16, 2013MillstreetreaderAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I found the Welcome Committee of Butternut Creek to be humorous, heart warming, and just plain charming. It was the kind of read that leaves you happy knowing that will be future installments. I believe Perrine has committed to writing three novels about young Pastor Adam and his Texas congregation. At the center of all the action are the Widows of Butternut Creek (Birdie and Mercedes, plus a few new "members") who are determined that everything at Butternut Christian Church be done just right. Now that they have Pastor Adam "broken in" to the RIGHT ways of doing things, they are ready to play matchmaker and find him a wife.
After unsuccessfully trying to match Adam up with every single woman in Butternut (even the Presbyterian female minister), the ladies have decided that Gussie Milton who coordinates youth camps and events with several churches across their Texas area will do just fine. What they don't realize is that Adam has already decided that Gussie is someone he might be interested in, but he certainly can't act on his feelings with the widows setting up the couple at every turn. Gussie doesn't know the power of the elderly women, but she does know that being around Adam is starting to draw her out of a self-imposed safety net where she had hidden for almost a decade.
With side stories like that of the brother and sister Adam has taken in as foster children and the humorous experiences he faces when finding a replacement organist, The Matchmakers of Butternut Creek goes beyond simple romance. Our church organist, a wonderful lady and former teaching colleague of mine, just loved the first book. Can't wait to hear her comments about the organist trials in this volume. I do think the first book moved a little faster, but I often feel that when I read a series. If you liked the Father Tim series, you will enjoy Perrine's series. I look forward to the third book. The folk of Butternut Creek still have stories to share. I received a copy of this title from FaithWords, the publisher, for review purposes. All opinions are mine.
DARDYGREENSBORO, NCAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Fun and easy readJune 6, 2013DARDYGREENSBORO, NCAge: 55-65Gender: femaleI study a great deal and I need what I call a fluff book. That is a book that is entertaining and fun with a message ... or several messages. I love this series as it fits the bill for Fluff! The characters are interesting and developing and I am enjoying this second book. More please.
Christianfictionaddiction5 Stars Out Of 5Full of humorous nuances, heart-warming charactersNovember 17, 2012ChristianfictionaddictionQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Jane Myers Perrine has a delightful grasp of the English language, and she has written a story full of humorous nuances and wonderful, heart-warming characters whose antics are so enjoyable that it's difficult to put the book down! I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series (The Welcome Committee of Butternut Creek) and loved again visiting the world of Miss Birdie and Pastor Adam, and watching a unique yet surprisingly touching relationship develop between Adam and Gussie. I do have to admit that there were moments where my impatient nature made we want to shout at the book for Adam and Gussie to hurry up and move things along already! However, the moment when Gussie revealed bits of her past, I had a moment of clarity about what was going on, and was able to fully appreciate how everything unfolds in their relationship. Pastor Adam is such a lovable character that I can't help but wish he existed in real life. Many of his scenes had me grinning or laughing outright, whether due to his bumbling nature with woman, or when his poor car (aka heap of rust) acts up again, or the donkey scene at the church (you will have to read the book to see what I am talking about!).
If you loved the first book in the series, then you are going to enjoy "The Matchmakers of Butternut Creek" as well. And if you haven't yet met Adam or Miss Birdie or the rest of the match-making crew, then what are you waiting for? Grab a copy for yourself and enjoy getting to know these fun characters.
4.5 out of 5 stars.

Cindy NavarroCullman, ALAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5An easy readNovember 15, 2012Cindy NavarroCullman, ALAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3It took me a while to really get into this one. While it is not vital that you have read the first book in the series, I do wonder if my interest would have been captured a bit earlier. There were quirky characters, and fun moments, but sometimes it seemed a bit too predictable. I think I would have been a bit more forgiving on this if I had been in on the action from the moment of Adam's arrival, instead of feeling like I had walked in a bit late and needed to play catch-up.
On a positive note, some very real and serious issues were addressed in this book. I felt they were handled in a realistic manner, and did bring the characters more to life for me. By the last few chapters, I was beginning to care more about the characters and felt a more vested interest in them. Through much of the book, I felt only a luke-warm interest, but by the closing chapter, I must admit to being curious to what will happen in the third in this series. So, I am borderline between 3 or 4 stars, but will go with a 4 star review...with reservation. I would recommend getting The Welcome Committee Of Butternut Creek and reading it first.
