When Nocent's Liturgical Year was published in 1975, it was the first comprehensive commentary on the 3-year lectionary in relation to the newly revised sacramentary/missal. Its pressing question was: what does this passage mean for us today? Now amended and annotated by Paul Turner for a new generation of pastors. 336 pages, softcover. Liturgical Press.
Follows a three-part pattern: 1) biblical and liturgical reflections on the season; 2) the season's structure and themes; 3) suggestions from the past.
Adrien Nocent, OSB (1913-1996), was a Belgian monk and professor at the Pontifical Atheneum of Saint Anselm in Rome. He served as a consultor for the Consilium for the Implementation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, working especially on the revision of Holy Week and of the Lectionary for Mass.
