Product Description

The day before Christmas, Nick is unhappy about being dragged along for last-minute shopping with his dad. He's too excited about what he'll get for Christmas this year. While waiting for his father, he overhears a store Santa telling the legend of another boy named Nick - the boy who became Saint Nicholas. That story changes his whole outlook on the spirit of Christmas giving. Bright, festive artwork accompanies the text of master storyteller Dandi Mackall, who reminds children ages 4 to 8 that God gave us the greatest gift of all.

Publisher's Description

A new addition to the bestselling Legend Series, by award-winning author Dandi Daley mackall. This gentle Christmas book introduces the original St. Nicholas and tells why we give gifts in remembrance of the greatest gift of all. Nick is much more interested in contemplating his presents under the tree than he is in being dragged along for last-minute shopping with his dad. But while his father's off shopping, Nick hears someone say his name---it's a mall Santa, telling a group of children a story about the original St. Nick. In the long-ago story, a wealthy boy named Nicholas is moved by the sight of poor children and decides to use his family's wealth to help the needy, starting anonymously with his less-fortunate friends. Young Nick is inspired as at last he---and young readers---understand the joy of giving. A note at the end explains how the story of this early Nicholas might have grown into the Santa Claus of legend. Bright, festive artwork accompanies the text of master storyteller Dandi Mackall, who reminds children that God gave us the greatest gift ever given. DANDI DALEY MACKALL won her first writing contest when she was ten years old with fifty words on why she wanted to be a batboy. She won, but they wouldn't let a girl be a batboy. It was her first taste of rejection. She bounced back and has since published 400 books. Dandi lives in rural West Salem, OH, and enjoys her husband and kids, who will still, on occasion, be up for a game of family softball. GUY PORFIRIO, a native of Chicago, graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago and continued his training at New York's School of Visual Arts. Guy's passion for painting and telling a good story has inspired him to illustrate numerous books for children. Guy lives in Tucson, AZ, with his family.

Author Bio

Dandi Daley Mackall is the author of over 400 books and still can't believe she gets to write for a living, helping children of all ages grow spiritually. She and her husband, Joe, both write from rural Ohio, where they're blessed with three children and a variety of horses, dogs, and cats. Guy's first successful Christmas drawing was in third grade. His teacher, Mrs. Passarelli, had instructed the class to draw Christmas trees. Upon seeing Guy's drawing, she stopped him and told him, 'That's perfect, don't do anything more! Don't touch it anymore!' She held Guy's drawing up to the class as an example of how a Christmas tree should look - an encouraging first encounter with an art director.

I bought this book because a friend recommended it, and I do not regret my purchase. It has gorgeous illustrations and a touching story. I bought it to read to my boys every Christmas in anticipation of Santa Claus's arrival. It helps teach a spirit of giving and reminds the children that Jesus is truly the reason for the season.

Prolific Christian children's book author Mackall offers up this tale not in her famous rhyme, but in straight prose. She begins by introducing us to Nick, a boy who's grumpily Christmas shopping with his father when he overhears the store Santa telling a story...Long ago, there lived a boy named Nicholas. When his wealthy parents died, Nicholas asked his friends what they'd do if they had a great deal of money. One boy said he'd pay all the family bills, since his father was out of work. Another boy said he'd buy his mother a much needed coat. And a girl said she'd pay for her sisters' dowries, so they could marry. That Christmas night, Nicholas decided there was no better time to give gifts than on the celebration of Jesus' birth. He rushed out and threw coins and a coat through his friends' windows. He also attempted to throw dowry money through the window of his third friend's house, but the windows were locked. He looked heavenward, praying for God's guidance...and saw his friend's chimney...Modern day Nick is stirred by this tale of the real Santa Claus, and with renewed Christmas joy, not only finds just the right gifts for his brothers, but uses up his remaining money buying gifts for poor children."Nick felt sure he'd never look at Christmas the same way. He wanted to remember the gifts of Saint Nicholas, the gifts of the wise kings, and most of all, God's gift of baby Jesus."What I Like: I like the interweaving of a modern tale of a child who learns the real meaning of Christmas and the joy of giving alongside one of the historical legends of St. Nicholas, the inspiration for the make-believe Santa Claus. Guy Porfirio's illustrations are also beautiful: realistic and colorful without being gaudy. What I Dislike: Nothing.Overall Rating: Excellent.Kristina Seleshanko, Managing Editor, Christian Children's Book Review
