Introverted Gregory "keeps himself to himself", uses advanced vocabulary, and likes to be quite alone in his loft. He didn't appreciate the games, constant comings & goings, and genial happiness of his previous nannies; but now he and his sister Janet had Marta-a middle aged woman from Poland who's serious and consistent. Marta one day mentions that their kitchen has no "good place" like she had in Poland-a place where a Madonna icon was placed with candles and flowers in front of it. Seeing that Marta's unhappiness could be relieved by the addition of a "good place" in their tiled and Formica-counter kitchen, he and Janet set off on a quest to find a icon that eventually leads them to making their own. Gregory's quest to create a "Jesus-Mary" picture at all costs (even seeing it necessary to deliberately disobey his parents, and manipulate his sister to give him all her money) eventually has him working long hours to create a "just right" Madonna, and in the process, opening up a little bit of himself as well. 103 pages, hardcover.
