Publisher's Description

For generations, J.R.R. Tolkien's words have brought to thrilling life a world of hobbits, magic, and historic myth, woken from its foggy slumber within our minds. Here, he tells the tales is his own voice.

Of historic note, these selections from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are based on a tape recording Tolkien made in 1952, which inspired him to continue his own quest to see his vision in print. Also included is a never-published poem, "The Mirror of Galadriel," originally intended for inclusion in the trilogy, yet edited out. And, finally, Tolkien's son, Christopher, reads selections from his father's The Silmarillion, the epic foundation upon which rests the whole of his work.

I have listened to Disc One over and over because I wanted to find the passages he reads in my copy of his books. It is great to hear his version of those passages. I especially like when he laughs as he finishes reading The Bath Song by Bilbo that Pippin sings in The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter 5.

I agree that the volume isn't consistent but this was an informal reading!!

I haven't listened to all of it yet. An excellent effort, but whoever transferred the original audio signal to CD could have taken better care to keep the volume level constant.

As Tolkien fans, we were particularly interested in hearing HIM read his works. We were not disappointed. We are now looking forward to reading Simarillion!
