Full of magic and appealing characters, this classic novel takes readers on a remarkable adventure.
It's Omri's birthday, but all he gets from his best friend, Patrick, is a little plastic Indian brave. Trying to hide his disappointment, Omri puts the Indian in a metal cupboard and locks the door with a mysterious skeleton key that once belonged to his great-grandmother. Little does Omri know that by turning the key, he will transform his ordinary plastic Indian into a real live man from an altogether different time and place! Omri and the tiny warrior called Little Bear could hardly be more different, yet soon the two forge a very special friendship. Will Omri be able to keep Little Bear without anyone finding out and taking his precious Indian from him?
"Best novel of the year (1981)."--The New York Times.

My kids are 8, 6, 2, and newborn. They LOVED these books and asked often to keep reading. We ended up going through all three books in less than 3 weeks. The story is delightful and imaginative. There is a movie out covering the first book (quick note that the movie of course deviates from the book and contains some language-even some from Omri and portrays the Indian as all wise and announcing that there is no God). The characters in the book are more multi-dimensional, but the book still occasionally has some language. It was an enjoyable read as a family. My 8 year old had a hard time understanding the cowboy's speech as it was written when she read it on her own, but when I read it aloud, no problem.

Likes the idea of having a little person to take care of. I'm going to have hime write sequal to the book to see what he thinks happens in the next chapters.
