Hannah Shah is an Imams daughter. She lived the life of a devout Muslim in a family of Pakistani Muslims in England, but behind the front door, she was a caged butterfly. For many years, her father abused her in the cellar of their home. At sixteen, she discovered a plan to send her to Pakistan for an arranged marriage, and she gathered the courage to run away. Relentlessly hunted by her angry father and brothers, who were intent on executing an honor killing, she moved from house to house in perpetual fear to escape them. Over time, she converted to Christianity and was able to live and marry as she wished. Hannah found the courage to live her life free from shame, free from religious intolerance, and free from the abuse that haunted her childhood. This is a remarkable true story of how a young girl escaped a life of torture a story you wont forget.

Hannah recounts how she grew up in a world within a world; in that most of her street was a close knit community of Pakistani Muslims with her father as the Imam or "holy man" responsible for their prayers and worship. The community was like a large family among whom she could walk from house to house as a young girl without fear. The feeling of safety started to fade when she noticed that her father would beat her mother for the smallest infractions, such as food being too cold, being careful not to leave any visible marks. Finally one day she could not take it anymore, and during one of the beatings she jumped in between her father and mother and that is when the nightmare began.
Her father turned his wrath on her from that point forward and began beating her at the young age of five. After a while beating her wasn't enough and the abuse became sexual in nature. Her life was living hell as her family turned a blind eye to the abuse, and she couldn't tell anyone because no one would believe her that the Imam of their community was a sick and twisted man. After a decade of abuse she finally decided enough was enough and she planned an escape. To find out what happens you will have to read the book for yourself.
The book was extremely well written and very emotionally captivating. Hannah presents a straight forward case of the true Islamic faith and its view of woman. Wives are nothing more than property to be used in any way a husband sees fit and daughters are to be married off against their will in arranged marriages suffering the same fate as their mothers. Due to today's political correctness, the Muslim faith has been whitewashed as nothing more than a religion of piece with the dirty secrets of their treatment of women brushed under the rug.
The Imam's daughter is a very important book that I think should be required reading in schools all over the western world. I applaud Hannah and her courage in writing this book and hope more Muslim woman will follow her example. I pray that God will continue to bless Hannah and her new family.
On a scale of 1 to 5, I give the Imam's Daughter a solid 4.5.
