This exceptionally illustrated Bible storybook allows children to read the story, pray to God, and grow closer to Him.
Using actual Bible text from the International Children's Bible® as well as prayers, memory verses, and fun activities, children will love this large format and be engrossed in the intricate detail of the illustrations. Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments are included and stories are accompanied by a prayer for the child to pray, a verse to memorize, and a fun activity to help them grow.

I am teaching international students about bible stories on my college campus and this definitely is perfect for that. It puts beautiful illustrations with stories without making them seem like fairy tales.
Also, a great review for anyone needing to catch up on bible stories!!! Love love love this book!

Kristina4 Stars Out Of 5NOT for beginning readers but still...April 28, 2011KristinaQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 2As the mom of a beginning reader, I know well the desire to find a Bible my child can read all by herself. That's why I was excited to discover The Beginning Reader's Bible. This volume contains excerpts from the International Children's Bible, which the publishers say has been "tested and has proven to be easy for children to read." But unlike standard International Children's Bibles, the entire text of the Bible is not included and large, gorgeous illustrations by Marijke ten Cate are heavily featured.
In this book, children can read about:
Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
Noah and the flood
The Tower of Babel
God's promise to Abraham
Joseph and his brothers
Moses and the Pharaoh
Hannah and her baby
David and Goliath
Daniel and the lions
Jesus as a boy in the temple
Jesus teaching the people
Several of Jesus' miracles
The parable of the wayward son
Jesus on the cross
Jesus' assent into Heaven
The coming of the Holy Spirit
"A peek into Heaven" (from Revelation)
In addition, there are special pages for the 10 Commandments, Psalm 23, a few verses from Proverbs, Mary's song, the Lord's Prayer, a Bible reading chart with places to check off once each story is read, a list of the 12 apostles and the 12 tribes of Israel, the lyrics to "Jesus Loves Me" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children, plus a list of all the books of the Bible, a memory verse chart, and a sample prayer of salvation. Throughout the book, small sidebars with memory verses and activity ideas are found.
What I Like: First and foremost, this is a really lovely looking book. The illustrations are full of deep, Mediterranean-style colors and people who actually look like they could be from the Holy Land. Artists Marijke ten Cate did a phenomenal job. My 5 year old also enjoyed having me read this book to her; she - a beginning reader - cannot read them herself.
What I Dislike: This is not truly a book for "beginning readers." The type is small - normal-sized for an adult book - and the vocabulary is pretty tough for a true beginner. If your child reads quite well, but still wants lots of pictures in his or her book, this would be a good choice. Otherwise, consider this a read-to-me Bible storybook.
In addition, I was also surprised by certain passages in this book. For example, in the Old Testament story of Joseph, we read: "After some time the wife of Joseph's master began to desire Joseph." Later, in the New Testament, Mary is described as a "virgin." I'm don't think most kids in the beginning reader phase are ready to learn about adultery and virginity.
Some stories are also abruptly cut short. For example, at one point, Noami tells Ruth that Boaz is a relative and "will take care of us." The next sentence is "So Boas took Ruth and married her." This is probably a way to avoid difficult passages, but it shows the weakness of using a Bible translation for what is more like a storybook Bible than a true Bible.
Overall Rating: Despite these drawbacks, however, I think this is a lovely storybook Bible for grade schoolers - even if it turns out to be a read-to-me book. I give it a rating of Very Good.
Age Appeal: According to the publisher 4 to 8 - but the reading level is most appropriate for age 8 and above.

LringAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful illustrationsApril 19, 2011LringAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I received this Bible and was very excited about it, because I bought this Bible for my niece a while ago (only in German and interestingly enough at least one of the illustrations is changed). It's a beautiful children's Bible! They don't take the Bible and change them into cute little stories, it uses actual Scripture (from the International Children's Bible) and under every title it tells you where to find the story in the Bible. Sometimes the verses are shortened or they skip around to make it a bit more story form for children. (Or they take out the really brutal verses from Daniel in the lion's den!)
In every Bible story, there are three boxes spread over the pages labeled: Remember God's Word, Pray God's Word, and Do God's Word. These boxes help reinforce the stories. In the Dear Parents part of the Bible, it says: "the Bible isn't just about reading God's Word; it's about living God's Word." And with these activities, they help children know how to live it and not just read it. I think this is a great thing to teach children, especially at young ages! I'm very impressed with that part of the Bible.
Remember God's Word takes a Bible verse that relates to the story and encourages the child to memorize the verse. Pray God's Word takes a verse that is a prayer and relates to the story. Do God's Word encourages kids to do something (semi) related to the story. I loved how this section encourages kids to tell others about Christ and to read the Bible and encourage others to read as well!
I really like this Bible. I appreciate how it takes the actual verses and doesn't tweak them to change the story. I LOVE the illustrations! There are many small details to take in as you look at each picture. Some of them make you laugh and others give you a new outlook and what perhaps it could have been like (for instance, one lion in the picture of Daniel in the lion's den, looks really unhappy that he can't be chowing down on Daniel and looks like he's pouting!). The creativity in the pictures is so fun.
The Bible on the outside is very durable. Not so sure about the actual pages inside though. The font is a good one to read and not a boring one. I would not call it a Beginning Reader's Bible as they do. The text is not for a beginner, but it is more for a child who is a good read and wants to read the Bible on their own. But it can be used as a read-aloud Bible for those that can't read so well....so perhaps that title is fine. I thought it could be taken the wrong way though, so don't be fooled by the title.
A few things that I did not like and that could/need to be changed:
- there are a few typos in the story of Noah.
- there is a table of contents in the front, but there are no pages numbers to actually find the stories quicker and easier! (whoops)
- a few Bible stories aren't in it...for instance, Jonah, Abraham willing to sacrifice Isaac, Isaac and Rebekah. I just thought it was a shame to have some big ones missing.
I do recommend this children's Bible. You'll love the illustrations and be encouraged by the helpful boxes around the story.

I love bible stories and this book does not disappoint me. It is a very beautiful book. This Bible is set up with 13 stories from the Old Testament, 13 stories from the New Testament, and 12 resources in the back. It is using the actual Bible text from the International Children's Bible® so it can be easily understood by the kids. The stories are short. All pages are beautifully illustrated and the text are also large enough for the kids. Prayers, memory verses and fun activities also are included. As me and the kids are not Christian, so we skip the praying part. But nonetheless we enjoy the stories very much. The Beginning Reader's Bible is suitable for kids age 4 to 8 years old.
I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.
