The Holy Spirit, written by leading contemporary theology Veli-Matti Karkkainen presents a very guided historical tour of Christian beliefs about the Holy Spirit. Beginning in the Apostolic era, and proceeding step-by-step Karrkainen also looks at the Patristic, Medieval, Reformation, Early Modern, and Twentieth Century interpretations of the Spirit.

Karkkainen's work is historically comprehensive (and includes coverage of non-western voices) though it remains succinct. An excellent primer for students, Karkkainen's work is accessible to those just beginning to study theology as well as for laity who seek to understand their faith at a deeper level.

This volume in the Basic Guides to Christian Theology series presents a compact discussion of the Holy Spirit in Christian theology. Written by a leading expert on this doctrine, it begins with biblical perspectives on the Holy Spirit, and moves on to describe how the Spirit was understood through the major periods in the history of Christian thought, from the early church to the present. Veli-Matti Krkkinen is Professor of Systematic Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary and Docent of Ecumenics at the University of Helsinki. He is the author of many books, including The Trinity: Global Perspectives, and editor of Holy Spirit and Salvation, both published by Westminster John Knox Press.
