Like Liz, I read this book in 1971 when I was newly married and a new Christian. Since then I've been privileged to give copies of the books to new brides because I think we all need to see God in our everyday lives and be able to worship Him through our everyday tasks as homemakers and mothers.
I am often overwhelmed by the ideas for homemaking/decorating that I see in women's magazines and on home improvement shows. The projects just look too difficult. However, I was inspired to find there can be creativity in the daily things I do in my home and with my family. There are so many ideas in Mrs. Schaeffer's book that I would never have thought of because I never considered myself to be artistic. God is an artist and He has created us to be so as well.
I read this book as a young bride. It changed my life and influenced the way I looked at homemaking. It was the most important book I ever read about keeping a home. Much more than a "how to" book, Mrs. Schaeffer shares a philosophy about homemaking.Mrs. Schaeffer has influenced many women to bring creativity and warmth into everyday living.
This book was so boring that I had a hard time reading it. I only gave it a 2.5 because I thought that would be fair since I only read half of it to begin with. It lacked the "grit" of homemaking that I find encouraging and was full of frivolous stuff that really did not seem to matter a hill of beans in the day to day life of myself as a christian mom. By frivolous, I mean she encouraged stuff such as drawing pictures on your grocery list and such. Just not my cup of tea I suppose.
I bought this book when it was under the title of 'Hidden Art" in 1971! It was the book that changed my way of thinking of creativity in everyday things! God the Creator could use me to be creative! It was a wonderful, affirming book then and continues to be as I share it with others under this new title. Anyone who has ever thought of themselves as "not creative" needs to read this book and realize that hidden art is truly found in the ordinary areas of everyday life. It is in the little things that we are blessed and bless others. God wants to work His creativity through us! This book can be life changing! It changed mine.
