Product Description

Wesley, together with his brother Charles, was the founder of Methodism. For 55 years he jotted down his thoughts and feelings while preaching, teaching, and traveling. The resulting spiritual classic displays how an ardent, devout soul sought to embody practical divinity---exemplified in a plain, simple form of Christianity. 479 pages, hardcover. Hendrickson.

Publisher's Description

Hendrickson Classic Biographies presents a one-volume abridgement of Wesley’s multi-volume journals. The Heart of John Wesley’s Journal presents a remarkable life, recorded and examined in real time by Wesley himself.

Spanning some fifty-five years, John Wesley’s journals recorded his daily experiences in studying, teaching, preaching, and traveling the throughout England and then America in the eighteenth century. These selections present an engrossing portrait of Wesley during the course of his travels and evangelistic activities, illuminating the preacher’s views and opinions on a host of contemporary matters. Begun as a public vindication of his early spiritual and pastoral work in Oxford and America, Wesley’s journal became a means of keeping far-flung outposts of Methodism in touch with one another, a device for administering encouragement and rebukes, and a textbook of the experiential religion Wesley spent his life proclaiming. Wesley’s eclectic interests and passion for rational analysis also make his journal a rich source for any reader interested in observing the conditions and values of society—particularly those of the lower classes—through the eyes of a well-educated and intelligent gentleman of the time.

Author Bio

John Wesley (1703–1791) was an eighteenth century Anglican clergyman and Christian theologian who was the founder of the Methodist movement. Methodism had three rises, the first at Oxford University with the founding of the so-called "Holy Club," the second while Wesley was parish priest in Savannah, Georgia, and the third in London after Wesley’s return to England. The movement took form from its third rise in the early 1740s when Wesley, along with others, began itinerant field preaching and the subsequently founded religious societies for the formation of believers. This was the first widely successful evangelical movement in Britain. Wesley’s Methodist Connexion included societies throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland before spreading to other parts of the English-speaking world and beyond. He divided his religious societies further into classes and bands for intensive accountability and religious instruction.

John Wesley is a difficult subject in almost any category you can pick to delve in too. Some of his political choices lacked the depth of his spiritual life. But Wesley offers an opportunity for us all to see that the political sphere does not necessarily impact the spiritual sphere. That one can be "holy" and incredibly wrong at the same time. This book offers a gateway into the spiritual life of a good man who loved the Lord and was deeply flawed in ways that did not affect his holiness or the power of his mission, or, to accomplish his mission as he saw it from God. In these difficult times it might be wise for us to remember God chooses the people He does for HIS PLANS not ours, and sometimes the people HE chooses do not fit our point of view. Excellent book that gave me much to think about.

Has good journal entries. Not as well set up as other sources. But at one third the price, was the right book at the right time.

Such a delight to read a book that is edifying, and also very interesting and pleasurable. My only complaint is that I am almost at the end of the book, and I can see that it is going to soon come to an end! :(One of the most pleasant and edifying books I have ever read. The book is also an excellent source of information on Great Britain in the 1700's.
