I have purchased 3 copies of "Hard sayings of Jesus" One to replace one I loaned out and one for a dear Christian friend. The book serves me well, as I listen to many sermons, some that seem to sometime misconstrue what I thought were basic tenets. ....Bruce brings truth home in this study helper.
Bruce was arguably the most influential Evangelical New Testament scholar of the second half of the 20th Century. This book is a very strong contribution. The same material (with a few additional comments) has also been incorporated into the one-volume work called "Hard Sayings of the Bible." [The larger volume just mentioned, is co-authored with Kaiser, Davids, and Brauch.] Bruce was exceptionally gifted exegete. I highly recommend this work in either of its available formats.
To the long time student of the word, this work will serve to augment the understanding already gained of these hard sayings. Dr. Bruce, as always, is immenintly fair and honest in his attempts to understand the words of the Master. To those new to a close examination of Scripture there will be much new and wonderful information.
I used this book in Bible College and have also used it to teach Bible studies. The sayings are "hard" because they may be difficult to understand, difficult to accept, or difficult to put into practice. The exegesis of the texts are in depth and insightful and so I am not sure why anyone would imply they are not. If you have ever wondered why Jesus said something or found something He said difficult to understand, this book probably addresses it and can help you in your quest to understand what our Savior requires of His followers.
Some of the saying were not so "hard", but having said that, I love the book. The chapters are super short, and so the explanations are not over your head. They are in depth and offer insight above just the passage, but not enough to make your eyes bleed. Its great!
