Tom, Mary, Peaches, and new baby Sam Grey-Eyes live with their family in their hogan, tending sheep and planting corn. When they go into town, the missionary tells them about birth certificates. A tale of gradual acculturation, the children receive birth certificates, baby-clothes and blankets from the missionary, get canned food at the store, accept modern medicine for Tom's pneumonia, and eventually send Tom to a missionary boarding school, leaving 7-year-old Mary to watch over the sheep until it's her turn. 127 pages, softcover.
