Grace. Its what we crave most when our guilt is exposed. Its the very thing we are hesitant to extend when we are confronted with the guilt of othersespecially when their guilt has robbed us of something we consider valuable.
Therein is the struggle, the struggle for grace. Its this struggle that makes grace more story than doctrine. Its the struggle that reminds us that grace is bigger than compassion or forgiveness. That struggle is the context for both. When we are on the receiving end, grace is refreshing. When it is required of us, it is often disturbing. But when correctly applied, it seems to solve just about everything. This struggle is not new; it has been going on since the beginning.
We find in the pages of Scripture that the stories found there often mirror our own stories, and that we too need the very thing we do not deserve: the grace of God.
From the beginning, the church has had an uneasy relationship with grace. The gravitational pull is always toward graceless religion. The odd thing is that when you read the New Testament, the only thing Jesus stood against consistently was graceless religion. The only group he attacked relentlessly was graceless religious leaders.
Even now as you think about grace, there might be a little voice in your head whispering, It cant be that easy!
What about obedience?
What about disobedience?
What about repeated misbehavior?
What about bad habits?
What about justice?
What about repentance?
Its this tension that makes grace so slippery. But thats the beauty and the truth of grace. We dont deserve it. We cant earn it. It cant be qualified. But God gives it to us anyway because he loves us unconditionally.
The story of grace is your story. And as you are about to discover grace plays a larger role than you imagine.

Jennifer M3 Stars Out Of 5November 6, 2012Jennifer MThe Grace of God is a detailed and straightforward examination of God's grace as it is revealed throughout the Bible. Stanley takes us through both the old and the new testaments, and really shows us how it is a story of God's unwavering grace, as well as what that means for us as believers. He illustrates his points both through well-known stories and characters in the Bible, and his own personal experiences.
While I enjoyed the premise of the book, and indeed gained a much richer understanding of the true depth of God's grace, I unfortunately had a difficult time finishing the book. I'm not sure why I found it slow-moving, as the book was well-written, and in a conversational tone, but it didn't always hold my attention.
I will say though that it was an overall important message, and one that I think every Christian could benefit from hearing.

I like the way that the author uses Bible stories to illustrate the truth of Grace, instead of just theology.
LoganNew Zealand4 Stars Out Of 5Good view of Grace in the BibleSeptember 28, 2012LoganNew ZealandQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Andy Stanley creates essentially what is a biblical theology of grace. That is, he works through the whole bible, old testament and new testament examining the theme of grace. Starting with creation in the first chapters of Genesis Stanley sees grace as an essential part of the biblical narrative. Using this as his foundation he sets out to draw the reader in. Grace is utterly undeserved yet is freely given to all by God.
This book goes some way to dispelling the myth that the "God of the Old Testament" is full of wrath and judgement where as the God of the New Testament is full of grace. Actually He is the same God and grace is present throughout.
Overall this a great book for anyone to gain a better knowledge of grace and how it can effect all our lives.
