In my opinion this has to be one of the most beautifully and yet haunting portrayals of Jesus and the gospel ever on film. The dialog is taken "word for word" out of The Gospel of John (Good News Translation). There is no creative license taken at all. As you watch the film, the scripture comes alive right before your eyes. I am not a big fan of The Visual Bible (recently went bankrupt) and the quality of their other "biblically correct" movies, but this movie is nothing like the other "Gospel of" movies they produced. They have a masterpiece with "The Gospel of John". Acting, costumes, locations, sets and musical score (with parts using period musical instruments) is unsurpassed. All the award winning actors come from years of acting on Shakespearian stages in Europe and North America, film and television. Henry Ian Cusack (ABC's "Lost") as Jesus, is nothing like you have seen before. He portrays our savior in a true context as to what the meaning of the Gospel of John is all about....Jesus' identity as the Son of God. A remarkable portrayal to say the least. Christopher Plummer (Sound of Music) in the role of "The Narrator" provides a soothing transition between the spoken word dialog of the scripture (again, word for word). British director Philip Saville and dozens of scholars and clergymen/theologians ensure that attention to detail is a priority in this film as well as leaving you sense of what it must of been like to be present as Jesus makes his case to why he was sent into this world and that he is "the way, the truth and the life". I cannot tell you how many times I have watched this movie, it is that inspiring and meaningful. Two DVD set with extras includes the three hour theatrical version (a must watch) and a two hour "cut version". One reviewer here said the movie, although excellent, was "made by unbelievers". This cannot be further from the truth. And another reviewer said he much rather of seen Bruce Machado in the role of Jesus. I will tell you, that had Henry Ian Cusack portrayed Jesus in every Visual Bible film, they may not be out of business. These actors are night and day in their acting "chops". Visual Bible and Buena Vista Entertainment was in pre-production work on a new film (reportedly with Cusack and Plummer revising their roles) The Gospel of Mark. Even though a trailer (The Gospel of Mark trailer on you tube) was released it appears that the movie is not going any further anytime soon due to financial issues. Do yourself and your family a favor and buy this DVD. You will treasure it and it's message. Of note for young viewers; Crucifixion scenes are present and accurate, but no where near as intense as Mel Gibson's "The Passion" was. You do not see Jesus scourged (a visual using shadows of the whipping are present) or being nailed to the cross. You do see Jesus having a spear thrust into his side (made me gasp) and sounds of the two criminals having their legs broken to bring about their death.

A great advantage this film has over others is the fact that it uses only the words of Scripture.

Really happy I bought this DVD. Better then my expectations. Will probably buy it for numberous family members. Will watch it again soon! Enjoyed following alone with my bible. The 3 hour version follows word for word the book of John. Great DVD to have in your collection. Would probably be good for classes who are studying the book of John.
