It took an Australian Anglican minister less than 150 pages to demonstrate to contemporary evangelicals the role of the Old Testament in the proclamation of the Gospel. Graeme Goldsworthy's "Gospel and Kingdom" presents a challenge to pastors and teachers to view the entire biblical narrative as one grand story in which the unveiling of God's plan of redemption is not only progressively revealed, but progressively repeated. He shocks the reader in his preface by stating that this book's purpose is "for the recovery of the Old Testament as part of the Christian Bible." While many pastors pay lip-service to the Old Testament, few preach from it regularly and even fewer interpret it in its correct Gospel light. Goldsworthy argues that the Scriptures are incapable of being understood fully and accurately unless Jesus Christ is seen as the focal point of them all. Christ is the biblical hermeneutic! God's Kingdom involves God's people at God's place under God's rule, and this paradigm plays itself out numerous times until Christ comes to fulfill all three aspects and include those who repent of sin and trust Him. Although the book is small, resist the temptation to read it quickly. The chapters are "bite size," so savor each one. You will gain a greater appreciation of the Old Testament, as well as deeper insight into the Bible as a whole. Get several copies and give them to those in your church who may be wondering why more than two-thirds of the biblical text receives so little attention.
