Publisher's Description

Both new and experienced Christians find praying to be something of a mystery and often wonder about how to pray. The Four Acts of Prayer with Walter Wangerin, Jr. presents a framework for praying that infuses prayer with a rhythm while maintaining its personal nature. Wangerin teaches that prayer is more than communication; it is a conversation between God and each one of us. And because it is a conversation, it is made up of these four acts: we speak, God listens, God speaks, we listen. In the ten lessons of The Four Acts of Prayer Wangerin uses stories to explore these vital elements of the complete circle of praying. He shows us that these four simple acts, practiced and developed with diligence, bring us into a close communion with God that supports us in our daily living. The Four Acts of Prayer is accompanied by a study guide that has scripture references, discussion questions, class activities, and journaling topics. Walter Wangerin, Jr. is the award-winning author of thirty-four books, including the best-selling The Book of God; the National Book Award-winning The Book of the Dun Cow; and, most recently, Saint Julian. Wangerin holds the Jochum Chair at Valparaiso University, where he is writer-in-residence.

Editorial Reviews

Walter Wangerin Jr., a writer in residence at Valparaiso University, is the enthusiastic instructor for this 10-part program on prayer. According to Wangerin, prayer consists of 4 parts: our speaking, God listening, God responding, and our listening. Each of the lessons in this comprehensive study begins with Wangerin's lively lecture, in which he uses stories and quotations to dissect a segment of the prayer process. Group leaders are encouraged to pause the program and begin discussion. Aimed at adults in religious and Bible study groups, this thought-provoking production is also appropriate for individuals interested in exploring and learning more about personal meditation. A study guide contains scripture quotations, activities, discussion questions, and journal topics.

We are currently using this series in our Sunday morning, adult Bible study. It has been more than a learning experience for me. I personally have found the DVD to be most heart felt in that Dr. Wangrien is compassionate about the subject of prayer as well as personal. He relates personal experience to scripture which in turn interprets for the listener, God's characters, His voice(s), our personal petitions and God's answers. Any one that uses this DVD study will find it most beneficial and it is not at all lopsided in any denominational aspect so all can easily benefit and gain from the wisdom and love that Dr. Wangrien expresses so eloquently and compassionately. To better understand prayer and develop a meaningful prayer life with God, this series is far and above the most understandable, easiest to grasp, and certainly a must for all that desire to make prayer something other than an obligatory, esotaric, aspect of their lives.Speaking to God so as not to be intimidated by the "pros" is discussed and the listener finds methods of speaking to God regardless of experience or eloquence. Knowing God hears all prayer and listens is something we take for granted as Christians, but Wangrien takes this a step beyond the mundane and usual. He gives insight to how God responds to personal prayer and why. When God speaks and we listen is not the easiest of concepts to grasp. Dr. Wangrien explains and discusses the different ways and characters God uses to speak to us and how we must pay attention to those methods for a better chance at hearing what God has to say. This is a must purchase and tool that equips Christians as well as non-Christians, with the wisdom and knowledge of a meaningful prayer life with God the Father and why God is real, consistent, and in love with His children. May the Triune God grant you all His grace and peace always, Steve
