Product Description

Jeremiah Williams has been tending the gardens of the Tennessee governor's mansion for over twenty-five years. And like most first families who have come and gone, this one has stolen his heart. Mackenzie and her husband, Governor Gray London, have struggled for ten years to have a child and are now enjoying a sweet season of life-anticipating the coming reelection and sending their precious daughter, Maddie, off to kindergarten-when a tragedy tears their world apart. As the entire state mourns, Mackenzie falls into a grief that threatens to swallow her whole.

Though his heart is also broken, Jeremiah realizes that his gift of gardening is about far more than pulling weeds and planting flowers. It's about tending hearts as well. As he uses the tools that have been placed in his hands, he gently begins to cultivate the hard soil of Mackenzie's heart, hoping to help her realize what it took him years to discover.

This is one of the best books by this author. Gray and Mackenzie are happily married when tragedy strikes their family. How they each deal (or not deal) with their grief while trying to hold on to their faith is a captivating story. This book is hard to put down once you start reading it. The story is set in Tennessee and Mackenzie's mother and friends are reminiscent of the women in Steel Magnolias, and I think this book would make an excellent movie. You will feel sad at times and laugh out loud at others. A thoroughly enjoyable book.

Jeremiah is the gardener for the governor and his wife and is so loving toward them. The govenor and his wife stuggle with infertility, miscarrage and then the lose of their only child in a terrible accident. The gardener has a major role in their healing process.

The First Gardener is not what I was expecting, it was so much better. This book is so realistic, very much like what couples go through. It is sad, and at times hard to read, but the story pulled me into it and I could not put the book down. The story is about the first family, with inputs from the gardener, which makes it so interesting. I will be passing this book on to friends!

First Gardner was an amazing book. Denise Hildreth Jones descriptions made me feel like I was at the Governor's mansion in Tennessee. The story of Governor Gray London and his wife, Mackenzie, is one of heartbreak and hope. Jones tells a tell that makes your relate to the characters, care about them and root for them; even when bad choices are being made. And the surprise ending was great, full of unexpected grace.

Not even a 1 star rating, I would rate as -5 if allowed. It was awful. I would NOT recommend this book. Don't waste your time. There is never an excuse for profanity.

A beautifully written, sweet, yet sad story. Having dealt with depression after losing a dear friend, this story certainly hit close to home. It was a book that I could not put down, and read it with tears, and also sometimes a chuckle. An excellent read, that I throughly enjoyed.
