- MacArthur Old Testament Study Guide Series, Volume 2
- A Study in Genesis 12-19
Abraham is known as the father of Israel, because God appeared to him and promised that his progeny would become a great nation. Yet Abraham is actually much more than the patriarch of a select group of ancient people. Through Abrahams descendants, Gods own Son, Jesus, was born. Abraham is the father of all Gods people, whether born Jew or Gentile.
The Father of Israel takes an in-depth look at the historical period beginning with Abrahams initial call from God, continuing through his relocating adventures, and concluding with the story of his grandsons Jacob and Esau. Studies include close-ups of Sarah, Isaac, and others, as well as careful considerations of doctrinal themes, such as Covenant and Obedience and Trusting Everything to God.
This twelve-volume MacArthur Old Testament Study Guide series provides intriguing twelve-week examinations of the entire Old Testament. Each guide looks at a portion of Scripture from three perspectiveshistorical studies, character studies, and thematic studiesand incorporates extensive commentary, detailed observations on overriding themes, and probing questions to help you study the Old Testament with guidance from John MacArthur.

We have done almost all of John MacArthur's New Testament studies, and love the "verse by verse" analysis. We were disappointed in his Old Testament studies. The 12 week study is broken into 4 sections. They study first the History, then the Characters, then the Themes, and finally a summary. Very frustrating for us, the teachers. We feel we are teaching some of the same material over and over. We prefer the verse by verse approach. Although we will do 4 of these (Genesis and Exodus) studies, we will probably look for something else after this. We are seasoned teachers with university level teaching experience, so it is not our lack of experience that frustrates us. It is the format. We were in the Old Testament series for several years, and expected the same format.

These are wonderful to do, on your own, at home. I am learning SO much from the scriptures about Abraham. I thought I knew the story of Abraham, but there is much more to be learned from his life. I hadnt thought about tying his life into the coming of Jesus in the NT. Pastor MacArthur is very thorough in his teaching. I recommend these study guides.
