What would cause so many Christians to be willing to sacrifice their lives for their convictions? What would cause many kings, governors, rulers, and ecclesiastical bishops to hate those principles and the people who held those convictions so dearly? In the Twentieth Century, the name Baptist has been given many meanings; but, historically, Baptists have been Evangelical Christians holding to the basic truths of the Christian faith and the following six doctrines:
- The Bible as the sole authority for faith and practice
- Independent, autonomous churches
- Regenerated church membership
- Baptism by immersion of believers only, and the Lord's Supper as the two ordinances of the church
- Priesthood of all believers and soul liberty
- Separation of church and state

Dave Morrow5 Stars Out Of 5August 26, 2008Dave MorrowExcellent! Top Shelf! Well researched. I Teach Church History and require this book to be used. Baptist or not, this should be a must read. If you really want credible history.
Jack Cowgar4 Stars Out Of 5October 17, 2007Jack CowgarRelates a lot of essential, and typically omitted, history about the true church, which is made up only of born again believers. Most church history books ignore this truth and portray the Roman Catholic Church as "the church." Fact is that real church history presents the trek of true believers and followers of Jesus Christ, not the papacy and Catholicism. In other words, this book is one of the few that identifies the real Church of Jesus Christ and tells its story. Most highly recommended!!
Austin Tucker5 Stars Out Of 5February 2, 2007Austin TuckerI read it first in high school and then in college with Dr.Stringer as the class professor. It is the easiest Baptist history book to understand on the market and yet it is very deep.
Jessica BBC5 Stars Out Of 5January 14, 2002Jessica BBCI agree. A good book to start on if you are itching to know where the Baptists came from.
