She stepped onto the world stage as the Republican vice-presidential nominee in the election of 2008. Previously, she had only been a small town mayor and the governor of a state with slightly more than half a million people. Still, there was something about her. She was pretty, fierce in her conservatism and she seemed undaunted by the slings and arrows of national politics And there was something else, as well: there was a moral force that seemed to shape her life. As the world grew to know Sarah Palinthroughout the 2008 campaign and in her subsequent public appearances and bookpeople began to see the force behind her: a deep, lifelong Christian faith. This faith was the lens through which she viewed the world, the bedrock of her politics, and even a primary influence upon her personality.
To understand Sarah Palin, it is essential to understand her faith.
What faith principles, then, impact Sarah Palins politics, and what are their implications for the Republican Party and the nation as a whole? These questions and more are answered in the fascinating new book by New York Times bestselling author Stephen Mansfield and his co-author David Holland. These authors were given extensive access to Palins pastors, advisors, friends and family and it has allowed them to capture the moving story of Palins faith, as well as the meaning of that faith for American politics and culture.
Stephen Mansfield is the New York Times best-selling author of The Faith of George W. Bush, The Faith of Barack Obama, Benedict XVI: His Life and Mission, and Never Give In: The Extraordinary Character of Winston Churchill among other works of history and biography. Founder of both The Mansfield Group, a consulting and communications firm, and Chartwell Literary Group, which creates and manages literary projects, Stephen is also in wide demand as a lecturer and speaker. Not because of what I knew to be fact, rather because of what I had heard from various sources both during and after her and McCain's campaign. Due to the way that the media portrayed her I saw her as a beautiful but incapable, ignorant woman who simply had unobtainable political aspirations. Not many people had a genuine respect for who she was and that carried over into what I theorized about her. After reading Stephen Mansfield and David Holland's book, my appreciation and respect for her has been deepened. I now have a heightened respect for her faith, honesty, and frankly bravery for running in the political world, where she knew she had the potential to be eaten alive.
This biography, focusing in on Palin's faith, really gives a fresh perspective on Palin's roots and circumstances. The part that I found to be most interesting was her conservative background. I did not realize how traditionally she was raised or how open and straightforward she was about her beliefs. It is a quality that after reading about her, I have come to admire. I believe that it took guts for Palin to allow these men to have full access to her family, friends, church, and community solely to write about the "true Sarah Palin". It is rare to find a politician so unafraid of their past and present lives and what writers might find. To me that speaks volumes of Palin's life and personality.
Through reading Mansfield and Holland's book I found that Palin is not everything that the media portrayed her to be. Although she was raised in the rural portion of Alaska and knows how to hunt unlike many women, she is no caribou chasing idiot (as many media sources would convince). Instead I found her to be sharp and cunning and she certainly did not back down on the controversial topics that she stood firm on. She grew up in an exceptionally normal family that loved each other, prayed for each other, and clung together when the going got rough. Those aspects carried over both into her own family when she grew up and into her political dealings. From what I gather through reading this book, what you see of Sarah Palin is what you get. She is not hiding anything. After reading this book I found that she had gained equal amounts of supporters as she had critics. Either you love her or you hate her.
Put simply, Sarah Palin is a woman who is seeking after the God that she loves and desires to please. She is authentic. That is an inspiration to many, especially women. Would I agree that she was not fit for the position of Vice President? Yes, I would. That was visible through her lack of votes. This however should not take away from the incredible focus that Sarah Palin has, and that is to do what is right and stand up for what is right. The Faith and Values of Sarah Palin captures this true side of Governor Sarah Palin that the media never seemed to do justice. Ultimately I'm glad that Palin allowed this book to be written so that many could be inspired and encouraged by her story.
Jill JonesOpelika, ALAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Biography of political life rather than personalApril 21, 2011Jill JonesOpelika, ALAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3Few people outside of Alaska had ever heard of Sarah Palin when Senator John McCain announced her as his running mate. Today, it is rare to find someone who does not recognize her and doesn't have an opinion, either favorable or unfavorable, about her, her politics and her faith.
Stephen Mansfield and David A. Holland have examined her life and faith and wrote about it in "The Faith and Values of Sarah Palin." Her remarkable rise in politics was motivated by her faith and desire to fulfill what she believes is God's plan and purpose for her life. She upholds the values of honesty and integrity in her personal and political life which is why she has become a target for liberals and conservatives alike.
Never swerving from her faith or her beliefs in doing the right thing, Palin does not bow down to pressure or criticism. She stands firm on the issues she believes are important and refuses to backdown.
The purpose of Mansfield's and Holland's book is to open our eyes to who we are as a nation and where we are heading. Palin may never serve as our Commander-in-Chief, but she will continue to influence our politics and belief systems.
You have probably already heard many of the stories exposed in this book, but you will get the background information surrounding them. Not so much a biography of Palin's life as it is about her political biography. The authors give the reasons behind Palin's decisions to enter politics as well as the reasons behind some of her famous political decisions.

Michelle Smith5 Stars Out Of 5Interesting, Well-Researched Account of PalinNovember 27, 2010Michelle SmithQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5One of the most interesting and perhaps most promising young politicians of our times, Sarah Palin draws nearly as many critics as she does supporters. Fascinating as an individual, Palin has experienced a rather meteoric rise to fame since John McCain chose her as a running mate in 2008. The Faith and Values of Sarah Palin traces Sarah's life from prior to her calling to politics-prior to her Christian re-birth, prior even to her physical birth. The authors trace her life beginning with her parents, their faith and their decision to settle in Alaska and how they raised their children. This account continues through Palin's experiences as a teenager, as a young woman, and then as her political career blooms, first as a mayor and then as the governor of her state. Palin's character traits and values are outlined in each chapter and then revealed through specific examples which illustrate them.
Highly readable and quite engaging in writing style, this well-researched non-fiction book was informative as well as reflective. It answered many of the questions I had about Palin as a person, as a Christian and as a leader. Evidence of her strong Christian commitment as well as her thoughtful faith are both supported. A principled though somewhat inexperienced leader, she will likely remain an important political figure in years to come. While I find much to admire about her personally, I also largely agree with the author's analysis of how she can further develop her leadership skills in order to experience greater political success.

Tell us a little about yourself. I have ghost-written or edited scores of booksseveral of which have appeared on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list. I also co-authored Paul Harvey's America, (Tyndale House, 2009) and The Faith and Values of Sarah Palin (Frontline, coming September 2010) He is the principal creative mind behind hundreds of magazine articles, radio programs, direct mail packages, television specials and video segments successfully crafted for clients from the realms of faith, public policy and business.
What was your motivation behind this project? Sarah Palin is one of the most fascinating characters to appear on the world stage in decades. She has also been the target of some of the most vicious and unfair attacks of any politician in memory. My co-author, Stephen Mansfield, and I wanted to explore the reasons why Palin is such a polarizing figure in our culture and why she inspires such strong emotions--both positive and negative.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Readers will gather deeper insights into Sarah Palin's faith journey; her worldview; and what choices she might make in the future based upon those character-shaping factors. One particular chapter, "The Lies About Sarah Palin," explore many of the most common myths, smears and misconceptions about the woman.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Stephen and I spent a significant amount of time in Alaska researching this book. In our conversations with her parents, the pastor who baptized her, her junior high youth pastor, and many others, we were struck by how genuine, decent and deeply spiritual these people were. And how anxious they were to dispel many of the myths and misconceptions about Sarah.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Obviously, I'm a big fan of my co-author, Stephen Mansfield. Anything Stephen writes is worth reading. Francis Schaeffer and Charles Colson were both profound influences on my thinking and writing.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: The Faith and Values of Sarah Palin is not just another biography. While revealing aspects of Palin's faith that no other biography (including her own) have touched, the book also explores what our responses and reactions to Palin say about us as a nation.
