AngelAge: 25-34Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5April 10, 2013AngelAge: 25-34Gender: femaleThe Ecology Book tries to tackle the subject of Ecology from a Biblical standpoint. It includes Biblical texts, Eco-Friendly tips, ecologist biographies, and field trips as well as the educational text.
This book has absolutely beautiful photographs that all of our family enjoyed, and there was some interesting information presented in this book, but there was also a lot of information that was useless for our family.
The book was a little hard to follow, and I felt the information did not flow smoothly.
That said we did learn some useful tidbits abut ecology, and we were pleased to see Biblical truth tied in to the material presented.
Debra BrinkmanYoder, COAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great Ecology Book, for a range of agesMarch 22, 2013Debra BrinkmanYoder, COAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is fabulous. I really appreciated that it was a book that could be used for a wide range of kids. The background in color-coded, so the pale background is a "level 1" (roughly 5th-6th grade), and you have colors for level 2 (7th-8th grade) and level 3 (9th-11th grade) as well. We all felt the grade designations were a bit off, but that may just be because we do so much science around here. I'd label Level 1 as 3rd-6th grade, Level 2 as 5th-8th grade, and Level 3 as 8th-11th. Roughly. Even my first grader was grasping the Level 1 material though, and she got a fair amount of the Level 2 stuff too.
The content is great, and I really think that this book, coupled with some hands-on projects (some of which are a natural extension of the book) could easily be the spine for a 1/2 credit high school course. Have the student do some observations and record some findings, have them work to demonstrate mastery of the vocabulary, and have them do a bit of research into one or more of the areas covered in the text, and you are probably there. I'd throw in a biography or two of some of the ecologists featured in the text as well, but we love biographies. Of course, there will also be a study guide available for this book, and based on the one for The Archaeology Book, that guide will help in making this high school credit-worthy. But I have not seen that guide.
This is a fantastic book.
I received this ebook for free from New Leaf Publishing Group, in exchange for my honest review.
Sufficient in JesusAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5March 17, 2013Sufficient in JesusAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book was excellent.
Not only was it informative but surprising easy for me to understand and grasp what was being said.
It kept my attention like no other science book ever has, because while it was very informative it was concise, And it was fascinating as well.
This book talks about things I would never even have known about (fungus in root cells, how plants "talk") and things I do see often but may not understand like Indian Pipe plants and yogurt. I never knew why plain yogurt was sour but I found out.
There are logical answers to many difficult questions, including one that I had heard before, "Why did God create the sun after the earth and plants? And doesn't that disprove creation and the Bible's account of it?"
The Ecology book answers the question. "Many people question the book of Genesis because if the sun drives ecosystems and the plants were created before the sun, that does not match with what we observe, so they assume the Bible is wrong..... remember that the Creator was an eyewitness to His creation and has briefly reported what took place. Light was the first thing that was created, and that is all plants need to carry on photosynthesis. On Day 4, He simply created a physical body from which light came."
A grand answer to a difficult question.
The pictures it it were beautiful and really helped to illustrate the concepts.
It is a great book and a logical and Biblical defense of creation and the authority of the Bible, in short you must get this book.
It is designed for family study and I believe it would be a wonderful read aloud.
Leah CourtneyRock Hill, SCAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great Science ResourceFebruary 25, 2013Leah CourtneyRock Hill, SCAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I was impressed by this science course. Here are some of my favorite things.
* The book has three levels of reading. Level 1 is for 5th and 6th graders. Everything at this level is written on a white background. Level 2 is for 7th and 8th graders and is written on a green background. Level 3 is written for 9th-11th graders and is written on a blue background. I really like that I can use the same resource for different grade levels.
* This book, like all I've reviewed from Master Books has a distinctively Christian worldview. I think that is vital in a science course. The authors don't steer away from the difficult subjects, but they bring the truth of God's Word into everything.
* Every chapter begins with a "Big Five" - Questions of Who, What, Where, Why and How that are going to be answered in the chapter. This guides students as they read to look for the answers.
* The book deals with our responsibility as Christians in taking care of the world God has given us. Our moral responsibility to care for God's world is covered again and again.
My one concern is that the book seems as if it might be a little short for a high school course. I haven't headed into the high school waters yet, but it seems as if this would count as at least a partial course credit in our state.
