Product Description

Every day, Christians make the devil laugh. He snickers as we repeatedly make foolish mistakes that hinder the kingdom and break God's heart. In The 10 Dumbest Things Christians Do, Mark Atteberry identifies the costly blunders we all commit and that for too long have gone unnoticed and unchallenged.

As a pastor for over thirty years, Atteberry gets to the bottom of some tough questions. Why are so many churches not growing? Why are our efforts to serve God so woefully ineffective? Why do Christians have so little credibility in the eyes of the world? All too often, it's because of dumb moves like: winning people to the church rather than to the Lord, living below the level of our beliefs, speaking above the level of our knowledge, church hopping, and allowing wolves to live among the sheep. This well-reasoned, Scripture-supported treatise is a timely wake-up call for all Christians, including preachers and other leaders who have no idea how much damage they're doing. Includes questions for personal reflection or group discussion.

Publisher's Description

Author and pastor Mark Atteberry takes a fresh look at why believers' efforts to serve God are often woefully ineffective. These dumb things explain why the world has a hard time taking us seriously, and worst of all, they provide Satan with a never ending supply of opportunities to make the people of God look foolish.

Light and at times comical is Pastor Mark Atteberry’s book, The 10 Dumbest Things Christians Do. It is his aim to identify what he believes are “the ten dumbest things we do to frustrate God and keep the devil in stitches” (p. ix). Atteberry’s theme is to help Christians avoid those practices commonly found among professing Christians and churches that end up hindering their ability to faithfully represent Christ (p. x).
The ten practices he highlights in the book are: “Slinging Mud on the Bride of Christ,” “Winning People to the Church Rather Than to the Lord,” “Living Below the Level of Our Beliefs,” “Speaking Above the Level of Our Knowledge,” “Hopping from Church to Church,” “Fighting Among Ourselves,” “Missing Golden Opportunities,” “Settling for Mediocrity,” “Allowing Wolves to Live Among the Sheep,” and “Accepting the Unacceptable.”
Every chapter defines the problem and gives an enumerated list as to the consequences of each problem. Each chapter then concludes with a number of practical considerations that will help believers to avoid the mistake caught in Atteberry’s crosshairs.
His chapters are full of personal illustrations, contemporary stories from current trends, and news accounts. His years of pastoral experience and stories of trial are well told. I would readily assume that each of these chapters was part of a sermon series Pastor Attebury preached in his congregation.
The 10 Dumbest Things could be a good book to give to new members before they join the church. Perhaps the church would, in a winsome and pointed way, cause incoming church members to carefully consider their behavior and motives and the impact they have on the life and witness of the church. If you are looking for a book heavy with biblical references or major portions of biblical exposition, The 10 Dumbest Things Christians Do will disappoint you. If you would like a light and practical book based on solid biblical principles that will humorously but also seriously address behavior among God’s people that is distracting from the message of Christ, this book will encourage you. – Bret Capranica, Christian Book Previews.com

I have been a Christian for nearly all of my life during which time I not only attended services and Bible studies, but spoke with Pastors about varying issues. Within the past few months, I have concentrated my reading on Christian specific themes including "In Search of the Proverbs 31 Man: The One God Approves and a Woman Wants", "The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at Americans Holiest University" and "Amish Peace" to name a few. I decided to purchase "The 10 Dumbest Things Christians Do" because I found the topics it covered very interested and the writing easy for a quick read. After reading nearly all of it, I have concluded I must be one of the "dumb Christians" because I found the topics were not deeply analysed or discussed (not to mention I'm still not convinced that most of the topics are really that "dumb"). Multiple times I thought that the examples were weak and not only did they not covey what I think the author was trying to get across, but in some cases actually contradicted the paragraphs just previous. I was actually surprised to see that this book seemed helpful to others, but I am glad it was. I was looking for a more challenging look at the reason for the "10" that were selected. I really think the topics were great choices, but the discussions were lacking and left me wanting more reasoning and understanding.

Practical, powerful--and very personal--this book is an in-your-face commentary on issues confronting every church, pastor and ministry. Rev. Ateberry's personal experiences come to life, and his clear directives regarding problems undermining modern ministries quickly become essentials. I loaned my book to a friend a few months ago (so she could deal with a puffed up Christian at work), so now I'm ordering a second copy (and recalling highlights from memory for this review). From church discipline to wolves among the sheep to dealing with sanctuary shoppers/church hoppers and condescending know-it-alls who grieve the Holy Spirit, this book stays true to its title: These 10 dumb things (a chapter is devoted to each issue) can kill a ministry if left unchecked or unchallenged. Bravo, Rev. A! Rev. Jon Heddleston Sperryville, VA

I Highly recommend that every believer in Jesus Christ read this book. It is from a Pastor's perspective and I caution that if you are very sensitive and easily offended then this isn't for you. You have to be open to receive feedback. There is so much truth to this book and it caused me to evaluate myself and the Dumb things that I have done and caused me to change. Also realize that Sheep are dumb animals. I appreciate Pastor Atterberry for being so bold as to present a very open, candid and compassion book for the Body Of Christ to learn and grow.
