avidreader4 Stars Out Of 5Errors CorrectedJuly 1, 2015avidreaderQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0We have completed other courses from Classical Academic Press, and having loved them, I was excited to purchase The Discovery of Deduction for the coming school year. I was surprised when I read an earlier review on amazon stating that there was a "big error" on page 163. I began to investigate and called Classical Academic Press to see if there was indeed an error, and if so, if it had been corrected. They immediately began to investigate and within an hour I had an email informing me that the error had been corrected in 2013, and that the book has since undergone 2 revisions. It is possible the other user had an old version. The current version (2.0) was completed this spring (2015). I am grateful that I checked with Classical Academic Press and am impressed with their customer service and commitment to parents and students alike. I am purchasing the curriculum with confidence and look forward to an excellent year in the discovery of deduction.
Joy HodgesAge: 35-44Gender: Female3 Stars Out Of 5It's okOctober 3, 2014Joy HodgesAge: 35-44Gender: FemaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 2Overall it's an ok book. The teaching is adequate, but I have major issues with some illogical examples in the book that are supposed to be examples of logic. For example (p 52): "Since all Labrador retrievers are four-legged animals, and since all dogs are four-legged animals, it follows that all Labrador retrievers are dogs." This is absolutely not a logical statement even though it's true. It indicates that all four-legged animals are dogs. This is the worst example of logic I have run into in the book so far. They are not all this bad so I have kept using the book.
keastmHamilton, New ZealandAge: 45-54Gender: male3 Stars Out Of 5great content but wordyFebruary 24, 2012keastmHamilton, New ZealandAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3I think this text is technically very useful as it covers the basics of formal logic in a comprehensive manner. My major concern is the amount of text (a small font is used) if this book is aimed at the 12 - 15 year old age group, especially if the group is not academically strong. A lot of students will be put of just because of the amount of text they are presented with. I think this textbook is an excellent resource for a teacher or someone wishing to teach themselves. I would not recommend it for use with children in the 12-15 year old age group unless they are great readers and motivated academically.
