One of the best! I haven't read any more of Hilda Stahl's books, but I plan to. If you like 'marriage of convenience' sort of books, you will love this.

I loved Hilda Stahl's Elizabeth Gail series as a kid and still do. So when I saw this book (actually a combined trilogy of which "The Covenant" is the firs) at a used book store, I snapped it right up. I have to say, it is very melodramatic and romantic but quite a page turner anyway. Stahl's writing is good for a romance writer, many of which can't even type a statement sentence without using phrases like "flashing eyes" "sinewy body" "she peered at him through thick lashes" (that sort of thing). Mrs. Stahl has obvious knowledge of the economic and political backdrop against which the plot is set (pine lumbering in Michigan and start-up businesses before the 'horseless buggy' took over). This is quite refreshing, too. A good, wholesome and interesting read.
