Endorsements

“Mark Mynheir is one of my new favorite authors. As a homicide detective, he knows his stuff and his characters reflect it. I’ll be one of the first in line for his next book!” — Terri Blackstock, author of Vicious Cycle and Predator

“Because of the Night Watchman series, Mynheir has joined my short list of detective novelists I anxiously await new releases from, along with Connelly, Riordan, and Landsdale. After a great start with The Night Watchman, The Corruptible takes things up a notch. If you demand both great plots and great characters from your thrillers, you need to spend some time with Ray Quinn and The Night Watchman Detective Agency. It’s like opening a bag of potato chips—you can’t stop with just one chapter. I read the whole thing in twenty-four hours, through lunch, dinner, and breakfast. Be forewarned.” — Brad Whittington, award-wining author of Welcome to Fred, Living with Fred, and Escape from Fred

“In The Corruptible we find Mynheir at his best, providing a true insider view on the gritty world of the private investigator. Mynheir’s made up world first whispers, then scratches its way to life with great characters. He mixes delicious evil and the slap of addiction with an even rarer ingredient in the world of crime fiction: the hope of redemption. I want more.” — Harry Kraus, MD, best-selling author of The Six-Liter Club

“Mark Mynheir knows how to deliver crime fiction with a punch—a terrific setup, strong characters, sparkling wit, crisp dialogue, and viable suspects that keep you guessing right up to the arrest. I’m thrilled that Mark has followed up The Night Watchman with another action-packed Quinn novel. Put this one at the top of your ‘must read’ list.” — Wanda Dyson, best-selling author of Judgment Day and Shepherd’s Fall

“With The Corruptible, Mark Mynheir scores a home run. This book is the perfect package of a broken hero to root for, a murder that spirals into so much more, and a tangled web of suspects and motives that literally kept me guessing to the bitter end— a rarity! A perfect follow-up to The Night Watchman that stands fully on its own. I loved it!” — Cara Putman, author of Stars in the Night

“Rich with realism and wit, Ray Quinn grips the crime scene and doesn’t let you go until the murder is solved. Hold onto your seat!” — DiAnn Mills, author of Pursuit of Justice

“I’ve fallen in love with Ray Quinn. I’m even fond of his sidekick, Crevis. With The Corruptible, Mark Mynheir has written another winning Ray Quinn Mystery. I love Mynheir’s authentic police-crime details and complex, compelling characters. And the plot never makes a false step or lags behind. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of The Corruptible ASAP and enjoy!” — Lyn Cote, author of Her Abundant Joy

“With the return of beloved character Ray Quinn, The Corruptible is a prime example of a book that grabs you from the beginning and won’t let you go. Mark Mynheir has created another flip-the-pages and stay-up-late-to-finish-the-novel story with characters so real they become your friends and a plot that will make your heart hammer. Don’t miss this fantastic read!” — Robin Caroll, author of Deliver Us from Evil and Fear No Evil

“A first rate detective novel from a real detective. Mynheir tells a fast-paced, gritty tale of murder and money in Orlando, Florida. His characters are flawed, funny, and deeply human. You’ll find yourself rooting for them—especially main character Ray Quinn—even when they’re making mistakes. The Corruptible is a winner!” — Rick Acker, author of When the Devil Whistles and Dead Man’s Rule

“The Corruptible raises the stakes, intensity, and storytelling of crime fiction to a whole new level of amazing! The insider details immerse you in a dangerous world of high-adrenaline suspense and raise soul-stirring questions you’ll wrestle with right alongside Ray Quinn. As you fly through the pages, take time to laugh, cheer, and say a prayer or two for Ray.” — Amy Wallace, author of Enduring Justice

Editorial Reviews

Praise for The Corruptible

A violent crimes investigator and author of the Christy-nominated The Night Watchman offers up the second Ray Quinn mystery. When an alcoholic private detective investigates the theft of a high profile company’s sensitive documents, things get complicated when the perpetrator is found dead. Quinn has a burly -- but green -- sidekick Crevis, who learns things the hard way. Mynheir cooks up a number of satisfying subplots and backstories: Crevis gets into police academy despite family and personal adversity; Quinn has a personal life, and loves, and even success in luring and nabbing an e-mail con by posing as a rich elderly woman. Funny exchanges between partners ( "I said look ’angry and crazy,’ not deranged."), impeccable action writing, and smooth pacing propel the narrative. The author knows the cop-and-investigation gig, but offers more, managing to be witty, insightful, and introspective. Throw away the cane, Mr. Quinn: you’ve got more cases to solve and a new audience that will knock you over to get to the next one.

The Corruptible is second in the Night Watchman series, but it doesn't really do the series justice. While the story line is complicated, it also drags a bit and leaves some loose ends that had me wondering if the story line would be picked up later. There is also the white collar scam thrown in there that has no connection to the plot at all, at least none that I could detect. Disappointed after such an amazing start with the first in the series.

Such a great read. This is the kind of book that I enjoy. It kept my interest and made me chuckle often. The next line/page isn't boring and predictable. My new favorite author and hope he has more coming!

I like the Ray/Quinn books. They are well written and hold your interest. They are hard to put down once you get started. One thing I like is that the story line is never the same. A good read for the summer or anyother time. If you like humor mixed in you will really like this book.

    MY REVIEW

Ever watch the Mike Hammer t.v. shows? Read any of Mickey Spillane's crime novels? Well, Corruptible has a lot of that style. A tough ex-cop with danger on all sides, Ray Quinn is a character you can't help but love. He's a tough (teddy-bear) ex-cop turned private investigator with an assistant who is ready to back him in a heart-beat. Ray's new client and new case has more twists and turns than a switch-back trail.

Mark does an incredible job in keeping the suspense high, the humor great and the pace fast, fast, fast. Through-out the story, he also weaves in Pam, the sister of Quinn's last case, who is a Christian. She helps Crevis (Ray's sidekick) prepare for the police exam, encourages Ray to let Jim (Jim Beam) go, and is there for him when he needs someone in a time of need.

Crevis is a wonderful sidekick for Ray. Impetuous, yet faithful, young and strong, Crevis acts as Ray's bodyguard, room-mate, and desires to become a cop.

The rest of the cast in this great novel are all well-rounded, full-bodied and complete the adventurous tale of Corruptible.

Fast-paced, an adrenalin rush from the first page to the end. This is one incredible novel. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more by Mark Mynheir.

I received this free Kindle copy from Blogging For Books for the purpose of writing a review. I am under no obligation to write a positive review.

I've made the decision to just read books written by men for a while. No ooey-gooey romance. I want my conflict to be more than just "should I go out with this guy or not?" or "should I tell him that I love him?" As horrid as this sounds, I want murder. I want lying. I want mystery. I want crime solving or legal dilemmas. I want the male leads to not be the kind of guys you melt over.

Ray Quinn is far from dreamy. He drinks too much. He only watches movies starring John Wayne. He's extremely sarcastic. He pushes the lines and bends the rules. He's an ex-cop turned private detective due to injury from being shot on the job. Think of Dr. House as a cop instead of a doctor. That's Ray Quinn. But, I like him!

The book summary is easily accessible, so I won't spend a lot of time going over the details of the story itself. Instead I'll focus on all the things I liked.

There are the moments of humor included along the way. Ray's sidekick is almost always a source of comic relief as he's learning the ropes. The man who hires Ray to find his missing client information is a germ-a-phobe, so to get the upper hand in the mind game the boss seems to be playing, Ray does a few things to kick the fear of germs into high gear.

There's just enough of a tease at possible romance that evidently every book has to have. But it's just enough to give hope that even the most unlovable people can find someone to love them.

I was honestly kept guessing the whole time about who the murderer was even though I figured out one part early on. Actually, I think that might have been set up that way to keep readers on their toes, now that I think about it.

My only problem is that there were a few references to the first book that I couldn't remember much about since it has been three years since I read the first book, The Night Watchman. When I requested the book for review, I didn't realize that this book had already been out for a year or I probably would have gotten it sooner.

Even with the references to his last case, I think you could read The Corruptible without having read the first book. If you enjoy mysteries, you'll enjoy *The Corruptible*.
