Product Description

The Consolation of Philosophy, written in the year 524 is a first hand examination of Medieval and Renaissance Christianity written by Boethius. Boethius was a Christian philosopher who was born into an important aristocratic Roman family in the 6th Century that boasted several emperors and council members among its numbers.

Boethius' penned The Consolation of Philosophy at age 44 while imprisoned for suspicion of treason, and was gruesomely executed a short time later by King Theodoric the Great shortly after finishing his masterpiece.

The Consolation of Philosophy is now considered a classic work of antiquity, and is the most recent recipient of this title. The book is formatted as a discussion between Boethius and "Lady Philosophy" who consoles Boethius by pointing out the transitory nature of fame and wealth and of the ultimate superiority of the "life of the mind". She also tells him that virtue comes from within, and that all that one truly has is his own virtue" for it is not subject to the whims of popularity or money.

Along the myriad other related subjects are covered such as the prosperity of the wicked, predestination, election, theodicy, God's role in the world, and a host of other topics arise in the discussion between Boethius and Lady Philosophy.

As w is the mark of any classic work, the thoughts, ideas, and realities that Boethius exposes in The Consolation of Philosophy are powerfully meaningful and abundantly relevant for the modern world which values everything the message of Lady Philosophy stands against. This book is a must for every intellectual's library, and for the library of any and all thinking Christians.
