Publisher's Description

"Fans of John Grisham will find much to like here." —Library Journal

Confession is good for the soul, but it could mean death to an ambitious young lawyer.

Assistant DA Holt Douglas has made a career of getting confessions from criminals. With a confession in hand, he knows a guilty plea is soon to follow.

In the midst of professional success, Holt is haunted by a secret—a lie he buried in the grave of his best friend. Holt’s crime is hidden from all eyes—family, friends, police, and his soon-to-be fiancé.

But the truth has a way of coming back to life.

With obsessive prosecutorial zeal, Holt reopens a cold case involving the death of the town’s wealthiest citizen. The man’s death was ruled a suicide, but Holt suspects murder. Facing fierce opposition, he is determined to expose the killer. Holt slowly begins to unravel the facts.

And comes face-to-face with his own guilty conscience.

With his job, his relationship with the woman he loves, and his future at risk, Holt skirts the boundary between truth and lies, confession

and hypocrisy, redemption and ruin. Can he survive long enough to finally make the right choice?

“Readers will find plenty to love about this suspenseful novel as they watch its appealing main character juggle personal, professional, and spiritual crisis with a combination of vulnerability and strength.” —CBA Retailers and Resources, regarding The Living Room

The Confession is written by Robert Whitlow, Narrated by Heath McClure and Published by Thomas Nelson. McClure keeps your attention throughout this audiobook. The voices of the characters are not always uniquely separate from the narrative itself, but McClure does provide some real emotional moments in his presentation.

The story of Holt Douglas is a legal mystery. As a prosecutor Holt is always looking for a confession. When he stumbles upon an old murder case file he wasn't supposed to see Holt questions why so little investigation was done. Was there a cover-up of a murder?

As Holt begins to look into the case he is shut down from every angle. Holts questions may open up old wounds that important people want left closed. Throughout "The Confession" Holt's own hidden past is brought to light. His secret may damage him as much as the cold case murder may damage others. Will digging up others past, when his own is not resolved, overwhelm Holt's conscience?

As a Christian book prayer, forgiveness, grace, and mercy are all themes. Overall this book is good. Only twice in this book was I on the edge of my seat listening. The story brings God into the everyday life of real characters and is a morality play more than a thriller. This is an easy listening audiobook.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This review was written for The Confession - eBook.
This is the first Robert Whitlow book that I have read. My hubby told me what a great author he was, and that I really should read his books. Well, "The Confession" came out, and I decided to give it a try. It was amazing!!

It starts off with Holt Douglas, and his best friend at a party, and then ending up in an accident. Fast forward ten years, and Holt Douglas is now Assistant District Attorney Holt Douglas. He is very proficient at his job of getting a guilty verdict, especially when he has a written confession in hand.

He stumbles upon an old case that was technically solved, but it just doesn't sit well with him. He begins to dig into the case, and does not believe that the town's wealthy citizen committed suicide. His boss tells him to leave it alone, or else! With all his digging, he begins to battle his own thoughts, of guilt, confession and forgiveness. But, if he confesses, he has a chance to lose his promising career, not to mention his girlfriend.

I received this e-book free, from Book Look Bloggers, for my honest review. The opinions were my own. :)

Robert Whitlow in his new book, The Confession published by Thomas Nelson takes us into the life of Holt Douglas.

Suspense and intrigue abound in this new thriller by Robert Whitlow. I wasnt sure exactly how Mr. Whitlow was going to get this going but he has a way of drawing you into the story and keeping you there, willingly I might add. Holt Douglas is an Assistant D.A. that is a hard liner when it comes to criminals. Thats because of an incident with his best friend that lies hidden in the grave. It all starts to come out when he pursues a cold case. The Confession is full of mystery and even romance. In The Confession there are so many twists and turns that you will be amazed at the outcome of the story. Robert Whitlow has written an interesting story that moves along at a remarkably brisk pace. The Confession is full of interesting characters that keep us involved in the story. The Confession is a powerful story and one that will keep you highly interested and flipping pages as fast as you can. I liked this book and recommend it to your reading list.

Upon opening the book I read this quote, Confession is a bridge everyone must cross. This book is dedicated to the guides of grace who help us in the journey. How profound! When I read it, I thought how truthful it is, and it piqued my interest. The thrust of the story brings home to our hearts the need to both receive and to give forgiveness to others. The author shows through the storys characters how difficult it is to confess our sins when we would rather hide them and the challenges we face when extending forgiveness.

Holton is a district attorney who carries a secret from his youth. His lifes work has been to honor his friend who died; yet, it is more than that. When Holt was 18, he was driving and lost control of the car and his friend nicknamed Calico was killed. What turns out to be difficult for Holt was laying the blame for the accident on his friend when in fact he was the driver. Trish works for the sheriffs office. While her duties are manifold, she is trying to come to grips with forgiving the drunk driver who killed her father and put her mother in a wheelchair. The character that I found captivating was Bishop Pennington, who is an example of a man available for prayer or just listening to those who need to share their burdens, keeping confidences.

When Holt is accidently given a cold case file of an apparent suicide of a prominent citizen, he begins to dig for the information not in the file. Though he is told to immediately quit investigating, he is drawn into the case which unfolds into more than what he thought was an apparent cover up. On top of all this, Holt begins his journey toward God while others learn the freedom forgiveness brings to them. I highly recommend the novel. It speaks spiritual truth along with a suspense-building climax and an ending that will steal your breath away.

As I was reading, I kept seeing how various characters struggled with letting go of anger or facing their sins due to the shame that overwhelmed them. But what hope and joy the characters reflected once the truth was all out and there was no more hiding or fear of the truth being known by others. The tale reflects, I believe, how we all at times fear confession, how we do feel shame, but if we confess, how free we become! A very enlightening and captivating story awaits those who open the book and take the journey. I did and it was well worth reading!

I admit, my favorite books are not legal suspense novels, but I absolutely love Robert Whitlow! I have high expectations for his books, and The Confession is one of his best. It deals with the personal struggles of ethics and is all about forgiveness. The characters are very relatable and the story is extremely good. I loved that he took his two characters, Holt Douglas and Trish Carmichael, in a different direction than the norm. You kind of see what you think is coming, and nope, it's not. Keep 'em coming, Robert Whitlow!
