Publisher's Description

A beautiful paperback edition of The Magician's Nephew, book three in the classic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia, featuring cover art by three time Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator, David Wiesner, and black-and-white illustrations by the series' original illustrator, Pauline Baynes.

On a daring quest to save a life, two friends are hurled into another world, where an evil sorceress seeks to enslave them. But then the lion Aslan's song weaves itself into the fabric of a new land, a land that will be known as Narnia. And in Narnia, all things are possible.

Witness the creation of a magical land in The Magician's Nephew, the first title in C. S. Lewis's classic fantasy series, which has captivated readers of all ages for over sixty years. This is a stand-alone novel, but if you want to journey back to Narnia, read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the second book in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Author Bio

Clive Staples Lewis was born in 1898. Known as "Jack" by his friends, Lewis and his good friend J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, were part of a writer's club, The Inklings, who would meet at the local pub to discuss story ideas. Lewis's fascination with fairytales, myths, and ancient legends coupled with inspiration drawn from his childhood led him to write The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, one of the best-loved books of all time. Six further books in the immensely popular Chronicles of Narnia followed, and the final title, The Last Battle, received the Carnegie Award, one of the highest marks of excellence in children's literature.

Pauline Baynes has produced hundreds of wonderful illustrations for the seven books in The Chronicles of Narnia. In 1968 she was awarded the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal for her outstanding contribution to children's literature. Pauline Baynes' work on The Chronicles of Narnia spans over 50 years. She has been both the winner and runner-up of the United Kingdom's Kate Greenaway Medal, an honor that places her in the forefront of children's illustrators.

This is my favorite book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. The story of creation told in a way that many can easily understand.

Amazingly, I did not begin reading The Chronicles Of Narnia until ten years following my conversion at age nineteen. I count THE GREAT DIVORCE, MERE CHRISTIANITY, and THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS among my most favored books, and my wife purchased this book for me as an anniversary gift with the idea to buy successive volumes in the series on following anniversaries.I was completely entranced by Narnia, particularly the great lion king Aslan. I read it extremely rapidly and was disappointed when it was through. Very pithy and witty, as is customary for C.S. Lewis; he aroused my hunger to experience heaven. I eagerly anticipate reading the rest of the series.
