Product Description

It is the now-classic story of two fathers and two sons and the pressures on all of them to pursue the religion they share in the way that is best suited to each. And as the boys grow into young men, they discover in the other a lost spiritual brother, and a link to an unexplored world that neither had ever considered before. In effect, they exchange places, and find the peace that neither will ever retreat from again.

A story that speaks of friendship and honor that can apply to all of us. You also get a glimpse into the life of two Jewish families seeing their differences and their similarities. Excellent reading.

Chaim Potok’s book The Chosen is a fictional book giving insight on the friendship of two young Jewish men. One is a Hasidic the other a reformed Jew, both from very different worlds. The story spans the time from the early period of World War II until the establish-ment of the Jewish State in Israel. This book demonstrates how their friendship endured the span of time, differences in faith, and historical turmoil. As the story progresses we are given more insight into the magnitude of diversity that separate their worlds. Reuven Malter is raised in a world of liberal thinking with few rules and good communication with his father. Danny Saunders is raised in a world of strict rules that are not to be broken and a father who believes his son should be raised in silence. The two worlds meet in a softball game. An accident in the game causes these two worlds to collide. Now these two boys are asked to put their differences aside and become friends in a world that is in the midst of turmoil. They are challenged by the diversity in their faiths and the political un-rest of the world, which greatly affects their friendship. From D-day to the formation of a Jewish state, the friendship is shaped and re-formed over the years. They are tested when faith and politics collide. This book demonstrates how friendships, attitudes and viewpoints can be influenced by the historical events of life. It shows us how we must not judge others by their outward appearances but by the heart of the person. It demonstrates how our attitudes can be changed if we will take the time to get to know someone who is different than we are. It also shows us how history has a great impact on our lives and how we see the world.
