What was your motivation behind this project? Years ago my wife and I were greeted with open arms by the wonderful people of Goldendale, Washingtona small county seat in the wheat fields of south-central Washington State. It was an experience our family, including our young kids, would never forget. And as the rookie newspaper editor there I had the opportunity to talk with many people in the community, farmers and sheriffs deputies, pastors and eye doctors, people who would leave a lifelong impression on me. The work was both satisfying and demanding. And every week I would carefully set aside the newspaper my staff and I produced, complete with stories of record-breaking pumpkins, school board meetings, or the demo derby at the fair. I knew then that I would need the papers again someday, not just for old times sake, but also for the book I would write about a special place like Goldendale. THE CELEBRITY is that book, though I can readily offer this disclaimer: its not meant to represent actual people or events in any way. It does not hold strictly to the towns actual layout, though many will recognize the inspiration for the setting. Its simply a tribute to the kind of folks whose values and faith represent the strength of our country. The kind of people who live in Goldendale and in countless other small towns across North America.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Like THE DUET, my previous novel, the CELEBRITY takes place in a small town setting. THE CELBRITY is different, though. It's a story of a celebrity trying to escape his past, and a small-town girl unsure of her future. My hope is that readers might recognize the God of second chances in this book.
