Everything you could ask for in a historical romance is in this story: a forbidden romance, gripping characters, action and adventure. Maybe they should make it into a movie.There's your hero: Captain James Templeton ~ brave, noble, & willing to sacrifice his own desires for a greater cause. He has men who respect him, a sense of humor, honor, is handsome and gives in to his heart just enough that we get those stolen kisses to show his weakness for our leading lady.Then there is the lady herself: Miss Marianne Moberly. She's pretty, intelligent, and though she operates within the bounds of society, she's feisty and breaks those rules when she deems it necessary. She also has an extremely strong sense of justice, does charity work, but is no fainting wall flower or airhead. Her quick thinking saves the lives of many people.The author did a magnificent job with her brother Robert, a lush who reforms after accepting Christ. He's a good friend of Jamie's with his help decides to find an occupation and marry the woman he wants, Grace. Marianne's father, Lord Bennington, never approved of any of his sons. His severity kept everyone on edge. He reminded me a bit of a bear that had been wakened before his hibernation cycle was finished.We feel the anguish Jamie goes through as he struggles with whether he is doing the right thing. He has real affection for Marianne's family and doesn't like deception. He also believes 100% in the cause of America.I could see him, with Marianne next to him, wanting him to ask her father for her hand in marriage. He knew her father would never approve, and he doesn't know whether she would last without her fine house and servants, or what she would think of his "rebellious" beliefs. Their struggle was one I believe could have happened. It did happen on these pages quite convincingly.http://leesmithwriting.blogspot.com/

There are several things I love about this book. The book features characters from Gouges first book, but it is not necessary to read the first book to follow the plot of the second one. Ive seen very few authors who can pull off this feat and Gouge does it well. Gough has clearly done her historical research. She puts you into the setting and makes it another character in the book. She does a wonderful job of capturing the Victorian time period and setting it against the mood of the rebelling colonies. I also like the way she used the conflict between the colonies and England on a personal level between Jamie and Marianne. I think that Jamie stole the show as far as characters in this book. I loved his moral dilemma between his faith and his duty. It was interesting to read because Im not sure what I would have done if I had been alive during this time. Im sure I would have fought against injustice, but Im not sure I would have chosen to take the path Jamie did. I also enjoyed Jamies induction into proper upper class of society. Especially since hes a sailor and sailors arent normally concerned with such things.The conversion of Robert was one of the most authentic Ive read in a long time. It wasnt overdone or clich. Meaning, if I was in Jamies position, I think I would have handled Roberts conversion exactly the same way. Some many times salvations and conversions are so stifled and unrealistic in books that they become a turn off. Gouge handles this one beautifully.The plot is solid and keeps you turning the pages. Gouge is a good solid writer and her books will find a place on my bookshelf.

Ms. Gouge's books just keep getting better and better. I absolutely adored this latest story of forbidden love. How can a lowly American ship captain ever hope to obtain the hand of a British Earl's daughter, especially when their two countries are at war? Set during the start of the American Revolution, this book has it all. Espionage, intrigue, romance, and adventure both on land and on sea. Complete with a happy ending that will leave you with a satisfied sigh. Louise Gouge's writing is like a fine wine. Elegant, rich, flavorful and warming all over
