Marco Polo went to China. All over China today are remembrances of his visit with his father and uncle. Proof of his visit even resides in the Vatican World History Collection and in the world maps he left behind in their family library in Venice. If any young person would like an easy and enjoyable way to become acquainted with the story of Marco Polo, he has only to pick up this book.

Tell us a little about yourself. My family is descended from Marco's father, Niccolo. This book, The Boy's Marco Polo, took years to write because Marco did not always write chronologically in his own book, The Travels of Marco Polo. I had to use translated histories of the Mongolian Empire to piece together a chronologically accurate adventure story. Happily, The Good Lord made me an archaeologist and able to spend long hours in research.
What was your motivation behind this project? My own son struggled to find books he liked in the fourth through sixth grades. He ended up buying Japanese novels to read and liked them because they were clean and polite. I was interested in a note I got from his ninth grade librarian asking me to buy him a copy of a book by a famous Chinese general. The book was The Art of War. She said he had kept the school' s copy out for two years and wouldn't give it back. I figured I would write about the Orient so boys (and girls too!) would be happy learning about that part of our Earth. Marco Polo was a good place to start. Since Marco's own book is very highbrow, this little story might be more palatable for children. It contains pictures that are etchings of the real locations Marco travelled.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope they will take me up on the offer to ask The Good Lord to help them read. I hope they will understand that Marco Polo was a deeply committed Christian like so many Medieval personalities.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I learned a bucket-load about jewelry since Marco and his family were brightest people in the world about purchasing valuable stones and noble metals. They were enormously wealthy when they returned from China.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? With this story, Benjamin of Tudela, a Jewish man who lived a hundred years before Marco was a valuable source of some information. It turns out he set the adventure story writing style that Rustichello of Pisa adopted in helping Marco pen his work.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: To all of the children who haven't been quite as fast as others in reading: Guess what! Abba Father can help you become a great student! He can teach you to read like a College Professor early. Just ask Him!
