Author Bio

Father Mark Arey is currently the Director of the Office of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, as well as a principal translator of the Holy Synod Committee for translation of Greek liturgical texts. Matt Dorff adapted the English translation of the Book of Revelation into a graphic novel script. He also oversaw the design and illustration process for the 16 months of production. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California Cinema School and has had over 30 of his movie scripts produced for film and television. Chris has created illustrations for dozens of books, graphic novels, and award-winning documentaries, combining both traditional and digital media in his work. He loves truth, beauty, and goodness. Chris lives and works in South Carolina with his wife Annie, who is also an artist, and their son, Marshall, and daughter, Pearl. Chris grew up splitting his time between Greece and Canada. At age 9, he started doing TV commercials and professional theater. He left home at 18 to perform in a series of US national tours after which, he landed on Broadway. Chris now splits his time between New York and Los Angeles acting in TV and Film. Also an established voice-over artist, he can be hard on numerous national campaigns and networks.

Excellent! Summary: Based on a 2004 translation by two Greek Orthodox priests, The Book of Revelation is an illustrated interpretation of the entire book of Revelation. This visual narrative tells the story from JohnÃ¢ÂÂs perspective in exile, on the Island of Patmos. Review: Unlike many similar Bible comics, The Book of Revelation, features no textual commentary, but only visual commentary. The entire text of Revelation fills this book, and the reader is given images to illustrate the events of the book. First, let me offer my criticisms. The translation used is odd . . . but thatÃ¢ÂÂs generally a good thing. It forces those familiar with the biblical text to consider it freshly. While the translation is generally faithful to the original language, there are a few modern phrases like, Ã¢ÂÂleapt forthÃ¢ÂÂ and Ã¢ÂÂrocketing from heavenÃ¢ÂÂ that seem out of place for the way the text was translated. In addition to this, some of the artistic interpretations of the original text just seem counter to what I visualize when I read Revelation. The image of Christ the Lamb is a particular example of this. Beyond these criticisms, I absolutely love this book. The authors help the readers experience Revelation almost as if we were St. John and these visions were being revealed to us as well. One of the brilliant storytelling methods the authors implement is using John as a character in the story. Often, the artists show us JohnÃ¢ÂÂs reactions to the visions heÃ¢ÂÂs experiencing. We see JohnÃ¢ÂÂs fearful face in the presence of God. We see his disgust at the murderous depravity of men. We see his shock and horror as the judgments are poured out on the earth. And we see his jubilation as he beholds the new heaven and new earth. Absolutely brilliant! The art colors are mostly muted an subdued . . . but when we are given vibrant colors, they grab hold of the senses and communicate powerfully. I should also pause here to note that I picked this book up in the Ã¢ÂÂchildrenÃ¢ÂÂs sectionÃ¢ÂÂ of a store. This is not a childrenÃ¢ÂÂs book. It is suitable for teenagers, but the book does not shy away from illustrating the horrors found in the book. In conclusion, I love this book. Revelation is a highly visual epistle, prophecy, and apocalypse. I cannot imagine reading this book without responding to God with awe, reverence, fear, and joy that one day, the Lord Jesus Christ will return and make all things right. a great enhancement to your study of the book of Revelation. January 11, 2013

This book has brought Revelation to life, as well as the understanding of many of the mysteries. The Artist has done a fascinating job with John's expressions, from amazement, fear, certainty as well as uncertainty. Having graphic pictures with almost every verse helps the reader to grasp visuals of what they are reading about. The pictures do NOT paint "pretty" because there is nothing pretty about being left behind to endure the horrible things that will come upon the earth. The translation is not that of the King James Version, but is very well written and easy to understand. My advice??? BE READY when Jesus comes back so you will NOT have to endure all this!!! This is NOT a 'picture' book for young children...some of the images are disturbing, but it does make you think about the reality of what is coming...it is a good resource as you are reading Revelation. December 7, 2012
