Product Description

While never formally adopted---due to controversies concerning the repositioning of the prayer of oblation, the calling of the Holy Spirit on the elements of the bread and wine, and the continuous reservation of the Eucharist---this edition is a favorite among Anglo-Catholics and is still prized for its high-church style. 1132 pages, hardcover. Canterbury Norwich.

I purchased this to have all the elements of the Daily Office in one volume. However, this is a very bulky book, and whether the binding is sturdy enough to hold up to daily use remains to be seen--it does feel a bit flimsy with all its bulk. One can of course use the Lessons in conjunction with another Prayer Book, such as the 1928 American edition, and this might lend longevity to this volume. Since I purchased this primarily for reciting the Daily Office, I am reviewing it from that perspective, but it does contain the complete text of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer as well the clearly defined emendations proposed in 1928 as the title implies, and is thus useful for much more than the Daily Office.

This is the revision of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer that was twice adopted by the Church of England's Convocations of Canterbury and York, twice approved by the House of Lords, and twice rejected by a House of Commons, many members of which were not even churchmen of the Church of England. It is the foundation for the superb Books of Common Prayer adopted in South Africa in 1954 and in India in 1963. In addition to the revised rites, it contains the full texts of the traditional 1662 rites as well; for the readings in daily Morning and Evening Prayer, it gives the 1872 Lectionary Table and the excellent 1922/1928 Lectionary Table. The extraordinary feature of this particular reprint is that it contains the full text of the Daily Office readings from the 1922/1928 Table. Thus Morning and Evening Prayer can be said every day of the year using this book alone.
