Product Description

Nehemiah was a great leader. According to James Montgomery Boice, Nehemiah's leadership abilities were born from his submission to God, his ability to focus on the right goals, his wisdom in handling complex situations, and his courage to act decisively. "But the most important thing about Nehemiah," says Boice, "is that he was a man of God, and because he was so close to God in prayer and personal piety, he was able to draw from God the wisdom, patience, skill, and perseverance he needed." This insightful commentary follows a chosen leader through the great task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem 150 years after it was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar. Through analysis of eight dynamics of the Old Testament text, Boice explores all aspects of Nehemiah's work, from taking command to getting the work done, from dealing with oppression to dedicating the wall and establishing Jerusalem as a city under God.

Boice does a great job of taking some key principles from the story of Nehemiah and applying them to a life of leadership. A great pastoral commentary. It is not as extensive as many of Boice's commentaries as it is a bit more of an outline of a sermon series he preached. If the description captures you then you will find the commentary insightful.

I just got through reading this commentary by Boice, and while there are some insightful aspects to the book of Nehemiah, this commentary should not be called expositional or exegetical. It should not even be called a commentary in reality. It should be classified as a leadership book for businesses, not for learning about the book of Nehemiah. Yes, Nehemiah was a leader, but the story itself is not about Nehemiah and what Nehemiah did, this is a story about the Glory of God and His sovereignty over the king, the rebuilding of the wall, and then the rebuilding of the people. Boice completely misses that idea by outlining business principles for leadership in this book. God help us if this is passing for expositional commentaries and learning about God and His redemptive work.

James Boice does it again. His wonderful and unique teaching brings the story of Nehemiah to life today. His narrative and examples are so helpful. This is a great heart of God's wonderful life direction when one is just obedient and willing to serve in God's purpose. The miracle of building the wall in record 52 days is comprehensively explained with the formulas Nehemiah used that could have been written today. Highly recommend if you want learning and blessing in large measure.

For anyone who would like a good solid expositional commentary on the subject of leadership in action, this one would be it. James M. Boiceexplains the problems and practicalsteps Nehemiah took to stay on the course of what God called him to do.It also shows the reader to not bediscouraged when trying to do a work for the Lord. As good as thiscommentary is on leadership, it isexcellent to see one's faith at work and that is something that anychristian is to learn. This would be an excellent study for anyone.
