Product Description

This is a "how to" book of an unusual kind. The author proposes that Christians should approach the Bible, not as a collection of ancient documents, but as our partner in an ongoing dialog about our life in the here and now. He explains how to enter into this dialog, how to listen, and how to respond. Suggestions for reflection, discussion, and meditation on particular passages provide outlines for group study and for the individual reader's own prayerful Bible reading.

Publisher's Description

The Bible Makes Sense is a unique how-to book about the Bible. Brueggemann proposes that Christians should approach the Bible not as a collection of ancient documents, but as our partner in an ongoing dialogue about our life here and now. This book explains how to enter into this dialogue, how to listen, and how to respond. More than simply introducing you to major themes, Brueggemann reveals an engaging biblical understanding of the world that leads to a life of joy, wholeness, and peace. Suggestions for reflection, discussion, and meditation on particular passages provide outlines for group study and for your own prayerful Bible reading.

Author Bio

Walter Brueggemann is William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he is the author of dozens of books and hundreds of articles.

Editorial Reviews

"This is a splendid little book. I set myself to reading it as a chore . . . and ended up being delighted and challenged and astonished, all at the same time." — Michael Warren, the Religious Education Association

"Brueggemann is a prophet in his own right, and thus quite well equipped to make sense out of the Bible." —Richard Rohr
