Product Description

Set amidst the backdrop of the scholarship of humanism of renaissance France, and its love of luxury, power, and decadence, this fast-paced biographical novel on John Calvin is told from the perspective of a rival whose envy escalates to violent intrigue. The Betrayal is the tale of the private war of one man who was determined to sell all for an allegiance to the King of France and the jealous intellectuals of the Sorbonne - even if it costs him his own soul.

Get set for royal intrigue, desperate escapes, violent martyrdom, hazard-all romance, painful loss, high-risk debate, and sword-point confession. And learn how God can use the humility and unflinching faithfulness of one man to break down the barrenness and bitterness of another - all accomplished by grace alone.

Editorial Reviews

Doug Bond's latest novel introduces many to a largely invisible or pre-juducially ignored character: John Calvin. This historical fiction brings Calvin back from an unwarranted oblivion. Thanks to Bond's vivid writing style and thorough acquaintance with the period, readers now have a looking glass into the life and history of a great man. I am pleased to commend this fine book to readers, especially those who will meet Calvin in these pages just in time for the 500th anniversary of his birth.
Another great piece of historical fiction from Douglas Bond! As in his previous books, Bond provides a compelling narrative with clear historical accuracy and rich theological reflection. I don't know if I have ever seen these aspects so compelling combined as in Bond's books. This is why Douglas Bond is one of my family's favorite authors. In this book Bond helps the reader grasp the humanness of Calvin, the manner of life in 17th century Europe and the real struggle for the gospel. This is a great entry way into the life of Calvin and the Reformation in general. It is entertaining and spiritually edifying so I commend it heartily.
Anything Doug Bond writes is, almost now by definition, a fascinating read. But to have his skills attached to the life a John Calvin is a double treat.
Douglas Bond takes us on a journey to Calvin's times and places in a manner most colorful, convincing, and captivating. I felt like I was there.
Douglas Bond introduces John Calvin to us in a gripping way, colorfully taking us back to Geneva and its times, unveiling Calvin as the principled man of action, commitment, and love that he was. The Betrayal makes for an exciting read, showing the great Reformer's heart for theology, piety, and doxology, while almost effortlessly and implicitly undoing caricatures about Calvin along the way. If you want Calvin and his times brought to life in a page-turner, this is the book for you!
The events and ideas of John Calvin are captured in a lively, historical fiction, giving the famous theology a heart and voice. Douglas Bond’s eye for cultural detail frames the debates of the day in a specific time and geography, resulting in a fresh vision for our own times. Well done. With masterful insight, Douglas Bond offers us an illuminating portrait of the life, ministry, and theology of John Calvin. For readers of all ages, this well-researched, historical fiction takes us back to the sixteenth-century Reformation as if we were eye-witnesses of all that God accomplished in and through the life of His humble servant John Calvin.
If you enjoy reading the fictional works of C.S. Lewis, you will love this book.
I just finished reading The Betrayal—thank you, thank you for this wonderful work... I knew I would love your book, but I was unprepared for how it made Calvin's commentary come even more alive for me. The book has drawn me to Calvin's words with a deeper gratitude than ever before. I am grateful.

This work of historical fiction by Douglas Bond is a phenomenal read! It is the first I have read by the author, and it did not disappoint. Eager to learn more of the life of the great reformer John Calvin and having difficulty grasping much of the non-fiction I'd been reading (due to first trimester fatigue ;), I decided to turn my attention to a bit of fiction which requires less of my mental faculties. Tim Challies of Discerning Reader had reviewed this book favorably, and P&R had significantly discounted a few copies, so I ordered one for my personal library. I am so glad that I did! Bond holds the attention of his reader well with the suspense sprinkled throughout the text. Reading this work has helped me better grasp the climate of the time of the Reformation throughout Europe, the persecution that was so prevalent, and the enduring faith of the saints that have gone before me. I was reminded afresh that there are many who are currently enduring persecution just as the men and women of this time period, and I was stirred afresh to pray for my brothers and sisters. The book also stirred me afresh to memorize and mediate on Scripture that I might always be prepared to give an account for the hope that is in me (1 Pt. 3:15), just as Calvin did.I have a lot of respect for Calvin and the way that God has used him to shape our modern-church. Though he was not a perfect man, just as we are not perfect, there is much to learn from his life."Christ came to save sinners...And only those who believe that they are great sinners will be saved...You...are a great sinner. Yet is Christ a far greater Savior. Flee to him alone" (Douglas Bond, The Betrayal, pg. 371).

Very well written, simply an excellent book. I feel like I know John Calvin since reading "The Betrayal", and have learned so much by the way Douglas Bond blended some of John Calvin's writings into the actual storyline. It fueled my interest in learning more about this great and faithful Reformer, and in reading his writings. I could not put it down once I began reading it.

I bought and read this book because I simply wanted to know more about John Calvin and the Reformation in France. This was certainly accomplished--far more than I had anticipated. Calvin became a beloved Christian to me, even as his weaknesses were included throughout the book. I was left with deep gratitude for the way he constantly offered his unusual gift as a scholar to God, and for his deep piety until his death. The added plot of Jean-Louis not only served as a vehicle for clearly portraying events of the period and explaining Reformation figures who had been simply names to me, but also highlighting the deeply spiritual John Calvin. There were difficulties: the frequent burnings of true believers are hard to take, and I had to adjust to the writing style, which was entirely appropriate to this book. A worthwhile read.
