Product Description

Rediscover a great biblical and literary classic in the new, refreshing ESV translation.

Protestants exclude the Apocrypha from te Bible, but its literary and cultural value cannot be dismissed. Concordia Publishing House is proud to publish the first and only ESV Edition of the Apocrypha with notes and annotations by Lutheran scholars.

Described by Martin Luther as useful texts to read, but not divinely inspired, the Apocrypha allows Lutherans to look back at their heritage and see the Bible as our forefathers would have. Furthermore, the texts of the Apocrypha are essential reading for filling in the 400-year gap between the Old and New Testaments.

A key resource for understanding the New Testament's background, Concordia's The Apocrypha will include notes, maps, charts, illustrations, introductions to the books, and an extensive set of articles that will provide guidance to those who are studying ancient literatures such as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

This study Bible-style treatment of the Apocrypha is certain to be the most extensive, popular edition available; especially to those eager to study the unique Lutheran perspective on these books and the time between the testaments.

Let me begin by stating that I am not a LUTHERAN. I have always had an affinity for the Apocrypha. I read it in the KJV and in the NRSV. I always hated that though there were MILLIONS of study bibles, (most in a good price range) do not contain the apocrypha. I had the one Cambridge study Apocrypha and I loved it. When I got this one, I WAS BLOWN AWAY by the wealth of information. It is written extremely well and if you have a love for history, you will get your fill. With all of the notes, maps, commentary, historical information, etc. you will easily be able to bridge that gap between Malachi and Matthew like never before.

The other thing that I like is that even though it is a Lutheran edition, the information pointing to the Lutheran tradition is not so overwhelming that non-Lutherans would feel out of place reading it.

This is a MUST HAVE whether you believe the Apocrypha is canonical or not.

The Apocrypha the Lutheran edition with notes is awesome. It dose as it clams and really ties the Old and New Testaments together. The forward and notes at the front of the book are worth having for study and general knowledge by itself. It shines new light of the cultural lives of the time in the New Testament. It answers the questions of how Jerusalem and the surrounding area came under roman control. The Preface also tells how these books are not considered scripture but considered good reading by the Christian Church Fathers and explains how, when, and why they were removed from the protestant bible we know today.

The researchers who put this book together took great care in pointing out what makes each book non scriptural but also points out where the teachings relate. The foot notes and cross-references to the bible are immense and aid greatly to learning and understanding the writings. The Preface to each book is very complete, thorough, and interesting.

If you're into Christian history, this book will help satisfy that hunger. Besides the history the stories contained in the Apocrypha and their lessons learned are good for applying to a Godly life. Just as any writing not of the word it all must be tested agents the True Word of God in the Holy Scriptures

    Joyfully in Christ,

    Dan H.
